Alan McCormack said Brentford produced a disciplined performance in their FA Cup with Budweiser First Round tie against Staines Town.
The Bees beat the Skrill South side 5-0 at Griffin Park on Saturday afternoon.
Alan scored the first goal from the penalty spot and there were further strikes from Jake Reeves, Kadeem Harris, Marcello Trotta and Clayton Donaldson.
Brentford had complete control for most of the game and Alan said when they moved the ball quickly they were in command.
He said Staines had a good go but Brentford pressed well and did their job.
“I thought we were very good in terms of discipline and what we set out to do,” said Alan, speaking to Bees Player: Match Day Live after the match.
“We didn’t start well, we had ten or 15 minutes where we were sloppy, we didn’t get in to the game.
“We knew they would come out and get at us.
“Once we started passing the ball quicker we took control.
“We did the right things at the right times.
“It can be difficult going in to a game against a lower opposition; they gave it a good go and made it difficult.
“We defended well, pressed high up the pitch and did well.”
Alan said Manager Uwe Rösler had asked him to take the penalty with neither Will Grigg nor Adam Forshaw on the pitch.
“The gaffer pulled me aside a few weeks ago,” explained Alan.
“Will Grigg wasn’t starting and he asked me if I took penalties.
“I wasn’t going to say no.
“When we knew Adam Forshaw wasn’t going to play today he asked me again.
“I told him I have taken loads.
“I have taken a few; I have missed one or two.
“I will always step up, thankfully today it went in.”
Brentford’s win made it five in a row.
The Bees have climbed to fifth in Sky Bet League One after winning four in a row and Alan said there was a lot of confidence in the camp at the moment.
He said all the players knew there was strength in depth for players to come in and do a good job – as Jake Reeves and Ben Nugent did against Staines and Toumani Diagouraga, Will Grigg, Richard Lee and Sam Saunders, among others, had done during the winning run – and that made everyone better.
“We have a lot of confidence at the moment,” said Alan.
“There is a great group and we are very much together.
“We are going in to Christmas knowing we have a good squad, a big squad and players can come in and we can still produce excellent performances.
“When you have that it pushed you on individually.
“It will only go one way, up.
“Five wins from five tells you how we feel and how we are playing.
“We have to take every week as it comes.”
