Charlie Adams said the sky was the limit for Brentford’s Development Squad this season.
The Bees climbed back in to the top two in the Under-21 Professional Development League Two South table with a 2-0 win over Bristol City yesterday.
The top two in League Two South play off against the top two in League Two North to decide the overall winner of the competition.
The Bees sit second after the win – behind Charlton Athletic but ahead of teams including Brighton and Hove Albion, Queens Park Rangers and Cardiff City – and Charlie said reaching the end-of-season decider was the aim.
“The First Team are pushing for the Play-Offs,” he said. “So are we.
“If we get in the top two we go in to the semi-finals, that is what we want to do.
“We can do it, we are good enough.
“If we win our next few games, the sky is the limit.”
The Bees scored two first half goals to beat Bristol City.
The first came when Curtis Jones put through his own net and Charlie scored the second just before half time.
The attacking midfield man, speaking to Bees Player after the match, said he was pleased with his performance and the team played well, particularly after they went ahead.
“We played well,” said Charlie.
“We were solid at the back and we didn’t look like conceding.
“We are on the up.
“I am pleased with my performance, it I always nice to score.
“We could have moved the ball quicker at times but we got a clean sheet and we would have taken that before we started.
“Once you get a one goal cushion, the pressure is off.
“We looked to push for the second goal and play our game.
“We got it.”
The Bees played a 4-2-3-1 system against Bristol City, similar to the way the First Team have played in recent months.
Charlie occupied the central role behind the striker and said it was a job he liked to do.
“If you play one way you don’t learn,” he said.
“Everyone here wants to try and get in the First Team.
“We have to play as they do.
“It worked well and it was a good performance.
“It is a good role for me.
“There is responsibility as you have to create chances but also do defensive work.
“I am enjoying it.”
Charlie’s goal came when he ran from deep against a defence backing off at pace.
He got in to the penalty area before slotting home.
It was his fifth goal of the season and third in his past five games.
“I like to run at players,” he said.
“That is how my goal came.
“I ran from half way and got the defender off balance.
“Once you get going it is hard for them to stop you.
“I won a lot of free kicks as the slightest touch can knock you over.
“My goal tally is a big improvement on last year.
“I am playing well and I hope to create and score more goals.
“When I have played in that role I have scored every time.
“I hope to keep doing it and I can look to try and progress.”
