Brentford Development Squad Manager Lee Carsley said it was a shame rain meant a friendly match against Maidenhead United had to be abandoned, but it was the right decision to stop the game.
Brentford sent a side mainly consisting of Under-21 players to the Vanarama Conference South side on Tuesday night.
The game started in torrential rain and conditions failed to improve as the evening went on.
It was abandoned ten minutes in to the second half, just after Maidenhead scored their second goal, one put in after a shot had stopped in a puddle in the six-yard box.
Lee said the match was useful for Nico Yennaris, who was able to get game time on return from injury, and it enabled him to watch players he had not seen before.
But he added when players’ safety becomes a factor the game has to be stopped.
“Nico got another 55 minutes under his belt, coming back from injury,” said Lee.
“We had some lads that had not played much; they had a chance to get a game.
“It was another game for me to see the lads.
“It is a shame the conditions ruined the game.
“The referee was probably right to stop it when he did.
“I spoke to him pre-match because he was quite keen to call it off before the game and I wanted to play.
“I need to see the lads play.
“He did the right thing in the end; the final goal got stuck in a puddle.
“You have to be aware of players’ safety.”
The pitch was wet from the start and deteriorated as the evening went on.
Lee said that didn’t help Brentford’s ability to pass the ball but they still did it well.
He said The Bees had chances but did not take them and ended up being 2-0 down when the game was stopped, which showed a lack of confidence in the camp.
“The ball was holding up and that didn’t help our passing,” said Lee.
“There were a couple of opportunities early in the second half where the ball didn’t run and we would have been in on goal.
“The ball has held up.
“It was a still a good work out and good experience.
“I think we passed the ball well, we created chances.
“We had eight or nine shots in 55 minutes, which is not too bad.
“We need a bit more belief; this team is used to losing and is a young team.
“They are struggling with confidence.
“We have to chip away, there are good players there.”
Lee has been at Brentford for just over two weeks.
He said matches helped him get to know his players and even 55 minutes was useful.
Lee said the players would continue to work hard and progress towards their goal of First Team football.
“You can do all the training you want, nothing can replicate the match tempo or having a game, we had 55 minutes but could have done with a lot more,” he told Bees Player after the match.
“We have had a good week of training and done a lot of work.
“This is the first time I could work with a team to play a game.
“I am loving it so far.
“The more sessions I can do and the more time I can spend with them we can start getting players in to the First Team.
“It is important to keep working hard.
“These players are in a development phase and they have keep improving to progress.”
