Jonathan Douglas said he was “gutted” after Brentford were beaten by Colchester United on Saturday.
The midfield player described it as a “terrible afternoon” as The Bees were beaten 4-1 in Essex.
Jonathan, speaking to Bees Player: Match Day Live after the loss, said the team let everyone down.
“It was a terrible afternoon,” he said.
“We didn’t turn up.
“We were embarrassing really and we let everybody down, mostly ourselves.
“It wasn’t good enough and I am gutted.”
Brentford effectively lost the game at the end of the first half.
They conceded three quick goals, from a free kick, then a corner and finally when a penalty was awarded after a corner wasn’t properly cleared.
Stuart Dallas scored late in the first period to bring The Bees back in to it but Colchester scored a fourth in the second half.
Alan Judge saw a penalty saved as Brentford tried in vain to get back in to the game.
Jonathan said Brentford Manager Mark Warburton had every right to be annoyed with the performance, despite The Bees having already clinched promotion from Sky Bet League One.
He said they could put it right in their final game against Stevenage on Saturday.
“We couldn’t defend set pieces,” said Jonathan.
“We conceded from a free kick and then a corner and then a penalty came from a corner as well.
“The pitch is no excuse, we weren’t good enough and got published.
“The manager should be annoyed.
“The team that he put out let him down.
“We are promoted but I don’t play football to lose games, especially 4-1.
“No disrespect to Colchester but we expected to come here and win.
“They beat us, we didn’t turn up, we let ourselves down, we let the manager down and we let thousands of people that came here to watch us down.
“We have Stevenage and we have to put it right.”
Brentford Manager Mark Warburton said Jonathan, Alan Judge and Stuart Dallas were three players that could hold their heads up high after the match.
Jonathan added: “Stuart has done really well.
“Everybody makes mistakes but there is no excuse for not being able to run around a pitch and work hard for the team.
“It wasn’t our best day on the ball but Alan and Stuart never stopped working.
“Those are the people you want around you.”
There will be a celebration at Griffin Park on Saturday when Brentford play their final League One match.
It will also be a chance for Club Captain Kevin O’Connor, if selected, to play his 500th game for The Bees.
Jonathan said: “Kevin is a legend and I will be trying to get a win for him.
“He deserves it more than anyone.
“If the lads have anything about them, they will do it for him.”
