Simon Moore said he felt the 0-0 draw between Brentford and AFC Bournemouth was “a fair result”.
The Bees extended their unbeaten run to 12 npower League One games while Bournemouth made it 16 without defeat in all competitions with the New Year’s Day draw.
Simon said he felt Brentford had the better of the first half but Bournemouth the second and Brentford dug in well to ensure they were not beaten.
“Bournemouth are a good side who score a lot of goals,” said Simon.
“We knew it would be a tough game, a New Year’s Day derby, almost.
“First half I think we edged it but Bournemouth edged it in the second half and I think a draw was a fair result.
“Defending starts from the front, the boys worked incredibly hard and dug in well.
“If you can’t win, make sure you don’t lose, that’s what we did and that’s what teams at the top of the table have to do.
“You need a bit of luck at times.
“Come the end of the season, this will be a very good point.
“We have to keep our momentum going; we are still unbeaten in 12 games.
“The confidence is really high.
“Today wasn’t our best performance, we know we can better that and we will do going in to the next games.”
Brentford go in to 2013 fourth in npower League One with Bournemouth seventh and Simon said he expected both teams to be in the end of season shake-up for promotion.
Simon said the Brentford squad would have taken their current position – four points off the top with games in hand on two of the three teams above them – at the start of the season.
He added the hard work started now.
“Bournemouth are a very good side,” said Simon.
“They will be up there come the end of the season, as will we.
“We have had a fantastic season so far but we are only half way through.
“We have to keep the hard work going if we want to be up there at the end of the season.
“We would definitely have taken this position in August.
“We drew a lot of games at the start of the season and we could be clear at the top if we’d turned some of those in to wins.
“But we have also scored late goals and earned points so where we are is probably fair.
“We will do everything we can to kick on and stick there to the end of the season.
“We have worked hard to get in to this position but the hard work starts now.”
In the past few months Simon has established himself in the Brentford team – playing 24 games so far this season – and also got engaged.
He said he hoped 2013 would be even better than 2012 and added he was delighted that fellow goalkeeper Richard Lee had signed a contract extension at Griffin Park.
“2012 was a great year for me,” said Simon.
“I got engaged and football wise it has been my best year at Brentford.
“I am now one of the longest-serving players at the Club, which is strange as I am only 22.
“Hopefully 2013 can better that.
“I was delighted that Richard signed a new contract.
“He has been an older brother to me.
“I have learned a lot from him and will learn more.
“We have a great goalkeeping unit here, I say it every week.
“I think that shows with our defensive record this season.”
Simon missed Brentford’s previous three games with a groin injury he picked up against Notts County but said he was not fully fit.
“I am fine now,” he said.
“I have struggled a little but with a groin injury I picked up against Notts County.
“But I have been working hard with the physios, there are excellent here, and got back fit for today.
“I was delighted to start with a clean sheet.
“I want to play but it’s sensible to get it right before I come back.”
