Terracing will remain at Griffin Park for our final season at our historic home after formal approval was received. The upcoming Farewell Griffin Park season, presented by London Pride, will be Brentford’s last at our 115-year-old stadium. We will be moving to Brentford Community Stadium next summer and closing the doors on Griffin Park, where we have played since 1904.
Clubs promoted to the Sky Bet Championship are allowed a three-year grace period to convert terracing to seating. But with The Bees entering their sixth year at this level, the Club had to seek dispensation to retain standing at Griffin Park. And that permission has now been granted.
Brentford is the only Club in the Championship with standing areas and it provides a unique atmosphere at Griffin Park. The Ealing Road Terrace is popular among our most vocal home supporters while most away clubs fill the Brook Road Terrace at the opposite end of the ground. The Sports Ground Safety Authority recommended that the Club were allowed to retain standing at Griffin Park in view of the substantial progress being made at Brentford Community Stadium and the safety record in the terraces. Formal approval has now been received from the Secretary of State to maintain terracing at its current level for the upcoming season.
Jon Varney, Brentford FC Chief Executive, said: “It is great that we now have the formal approval to keep our terraces for our Farewell Griffin Park season. We know our fans love standing on the Ealing Road end and away clubs usually sell out their end as well, which proves their popularity. We would like to place on record our thanks to the SGSA Board for allowing us a chance to present our case and for giving us a fair hearing and to the Secretary of State for agreeing with their recommendation.
“If we had not been allowed to use the terraces this season it would have made a real impact both in financial terms and in our ability to celebrate our last season at Griffin Park. Our supporters are our best ambassadors and I hope to see lots of Bees fans bringing friends and family to stand on our terraces for the last time. They can get them used to the unique Brentford atmosphere and ensure they get the bug before we move next summer. I would also like to say that our Operations Team also deserve credit for the way they manage those areas safely.”
