Winger signs short-term contract at Griffin Park
Brentford have signed former Netherlands Under-21 international winger Florian Jozefzoon from PSV Eindhoven for an undisclosed fee. The 25-year-old completed a medical yesterday, Thursday 26 January, and is now a Brentford player, subject to international clearance. Florian has signed a six-month contract and the Club has the option to extend his stay at Griffin Park for an extra year, until the end of the 2017/18 season.
Florian, who can play in a variety of attacking midfield roles, is a product of the famous Ajax Youth Academy and turned professional with the Amsterdam side, making his debut in the Dutch top division when he was 19. He made five appearances for Ajax and was part of their UEFA Champions League squad before a loan move to NAC Breda for the 2011/12 season, where he played 17 games in all competitions. Florian moved on to RKC Waalwijk and scored seven goals in 36 games in all competitions, contributing a further nine assists, and was signed by PSV in the summer of 2013.
He scored five goals in 25 games in his first season at PSV, playing in the Champions League and Europa League, and has featured regularly in his three-and-a-half-years with the Dutch giants. Florian, who was born in French Guiana, played 64 games for them in all competitions and scored seven times. He has also played for the Netherlands at Under-21 and Under-19 level. He was part of the Dutch squad that went to the 2010 European Under-19 championships and also represented his country at the 2013 European Under-21 Championships. He played five times at each age level.
Dean Smith, Brentford FC Head Coach, said: “We are pleased that Florian has committed to us until at least the end of the season. We have been tracking him for a while and we are glad we could get him as we knew there were other suitors trying to capture his signature. Florian is a talented player who is an explosive ball carrier and will bring another dimension to our play. We are looking forward to working with him.”
Phil Giles, Brentford FC Co-Director of Football, added: “I’d like to welcome Florian to Brentford. He was desperate to play football and has agreed to join us for the rest of the season to show everyone what he is capable of. Hopefully this will be a successful six months and we will be in a position to secure Florian for a longer period at the end of the season.”
