Youth Team manager Jon De Souza said he was pleased that the Youth Team ground out the win in his first game back in charge.
Jon saw his side fall behind just before half-time in South Wales as Lloyd Humphries adjusted brilliantly to hook home from 12 yards.
Bradley Clayton levelled matters from the spot midway through the second-half before Zain Westbrooke scored the winner four minutes from time with a stunning 25 yard volley.
The result means it is now just one defeat in seven for the youth team who have won four of their last five league games.
Speaking to Bees Player after securing the victory Jon said he was delighted with the character that his side showed to come back to win after falling behind.
The former Under-21 manager senses that there is a real winning environment being created amongst the Youth Team this season and that is something he wants to encourage.
“I was pleased with the result but I felt the performance could have been better,” said Jon.
“To travel all this way and win 2-1 against a good side is always good.
“I think we could have had a little bit more quality in possession but the attitude and desire of the players was excellent.
“Coming from behind to win shows great character.
“I felt we scored against the run of play in the second-half which is great because doing that shows that you have a group of characters who can bounce back.
“We are trying to instil a winning environment.
“We want to win as a result of development and the way we play.
“Unfortunately today we didn’t play as well as we could have but we won a game of football which is positive.
“Football is about winning and we would never say that it isn’t.
“What we have to do is make sure that our performances match the results which they haven’t always done at the moment.
“You can never knock the fact that we are top of the table and that we are doing well with a winning mentality in the dressing room.”
After falling behind just before half-time Brentford had to weather an early storm from Cardiff City in the second period.
Jon said that he was very pleased with his side’s willingness to defend and not to concede when Cardiff were on top.
The Bees have conceded just twice in their last three games and for Jon having that defensive platform gives him a real base to work from.
“We started the second-half quite well for the first five minutes and then they got on top of the game again,” said Jon.
“I think it was massively important that we shut down their number 10 and we did ok with that.
“I thought he caused us the biggest problems when he made forward runs and we didn’t track him well enough.
“I thought our defending was very good throughout, even though we conceded.
“We got bodies in the way and showed a great desire to defend but it was out quality in possession that let us down overall.
“The biggest thing for me is their attitude towards defending.
“They want to keep clean sheets, they want to make tackles and they want to get their body in the way.
“If you can be organised and hard to beat defensively then we can always improve the players tactically.”
As the second-half wore on Brentford came more and more into the game as Cardiff’s intense pressing began to take its toll on their legs.
Jon felt it was no coincidence that his side got more of a foothold in the game as Cardiff began to drop off from their pressing game.
However he was slightly disappointed that his side didn’t move the football better and create more chances to defeat the Cardiff pressing game even earlier.
“For me I felt Cardiff blew up with 20 minutes to go because they pressed us with such an intensity for 70 minutes,” said Jon.
“I felt that if we had worked the football a little bit more and passed the football a little bit more they might have tired a bit earlier.
“We need players to be brave which they were.
“They accepted the ball under pressure but they have to have the quality to recognise where the pressure is coming from and how they can play out of that pressure.
“I thought we had a two or three minute period in the first-half where Zain Westbrooke had a shot, Bradley Clayton had a shot and Joshua Bohui had a shot but apart from that, as I was saying to Anthony Hayes during the game, I didn’t think we created enough or were enough of a threat.
“When we did get into the final third, on the odd occasion, we looked bright.
“Josh did terrifically well for the penalty and it was a great strike from Zain to win it.
“We encourage all of our creative players to be as creative as possible to create chances and take risks.
“Josh did that at times today but I felt he could have done it a bit more.”
Jon returned to his former job as Youth Team manager last week after a two-year spell as Development Squad manager.
Although the former Luton Town man knows all players already from his time as Development Squad manager he said he has been impressed with what he has seen in the opening few days.
Next up for the Youth Team is a home game against Bristol City on Saturday and Jon wants to see an improved performance in his side in terms of their in possession work.
“I try to know all the boys in the Academy especially from Under 15s and Under 16s upwards,” said Jon.
“I have got a good rapport with the majority of those players.
“They are a good group and I am looking forward to working with them.
“I am expecting hard work from the boys trying to get better and to improve ahead of the game with Bristol City.
“I don’t know what Bristol City will do but we will need to show the same quality that we have done in the last two weeks out of possession and dominate the ball a little bit more in possession.”
