Brentford Bees started the New Year with a 2-0 defeat on their travels at Football Conference Youth Alliance South West Division leaders Southampton (Bath) last Wednesday.
Southampton have swept almost all before them this season winning eight of their opening 10 games and they made it nine from 11 against The Bees.
The result leaves Brentford seventh in the South West Division but they are just three points behind second-placed Oxford City after a run of three wins in four.
Speaking about the result after the match Youth Alliance coach Dan Wright said: "It was a difficult game for the Bees today against a very good Southampton side.
"We first faced this side at the start of the season and looked out of our depth, losing heavily with many players struggling to find their feet.
"To come here and put in a good performance and compete was really really pleasing and shows have far individually and collectively they’ve come.
"We were desperately unlucky to have a penalty awarded against us and perhaps, on another day, we could have frustrated the opposition more and grown into the game.
"Losing a game of football is never the objective, but in terms of their development there were players today who have shown a marked improvement.
"We have to remember that this side are 12 points clear in this league and have very much set the benchmark for ourselves and others to match.
"This group have come off the back of 3 wins and we will look to get back on track next with a friendly fixture, before we host Basingstoke in February.”
Brentford's Griffins, the other side entered in the Youth Alliance, were not in action last week but are in action tomorrow when they travel to Tooting & Mitcham FC in the London and South East division.
