Clayton Donaldson said there would be a struggle to find fault with the way Brentford played in their FA Cup with Budweiser Third Round Replay against Southend United.
The Bees reached the Fourth Round with a 2-1 win over the League Two side having drawn the first tie 2-2.
Paul Hayes put Brentford ahead in the first half but The Bees could not get a second goal as Southend goalkeeper Paul Smith produces save after save, including one from a Harry Forrester penalty.
Southend then equalised in the second period but Clayton scored the winning goal inside the final 15 minutes.
The striker, who scored his 18th of the season in the win, spoke to The Bees Player Show after the match.
“Their keeper has kept them in the game,” he said.
“He made some brilliant saves.
“I don’t think we could have done any more.
“Our game plan worked, we took hold of the game.
“It was very different from the game at their place, they may have edged it down there but it could have been five or six in the first half.
“You can’t fault the way we performed.
“We were excellent and if it was not for their goalkeeper we would have had a lot more.”
Harry Forrester also spoke to The Bees Player Show after the match.
He also praised the Southend goalkeeper and said the prize of a tie against current UEFA Champions League and FA Cup holders Chelsea in the Fourth Round was an extra incentive for The Bees.
“I think we have had about 20 decent attempts and their goalkeeper has got to almost every one,” said Harry.
“He was unbelievable.
“We have knocked on the door all night.
“It took a deflection on Clayton’s shot to beat him.
“He was brilliant.
“We knew the game wasn’t over at half time.
“We knew we had played well in the first half but Southend are a decent team and we knew they would come back.
“We needed a second goal.
“I missed a penalty and we were wondering if it was going to be one of those nights.
“We had so many attempts and then they equalised.
“But we kept pushing and got the winner.
“We showed how well we can play tonight.
“We believed we could open them up again after they equalised, we had done it all night.
“Everyone was terrific.
“Knowing we had such a big team waiting was an extra spur for us.
“It hasn’t sunk in yet.
“We have a big game on Saturday [against Tranmere Rovers]; we have to do the business then.
“It is a dream to play such a big game.”
Clayton said Brentford would be concentrating on their game against npower League One leaders Tranmere Rovers, which will take place on Saturday.
But he added the Chelsea game was one the players could now think about, having tried to put it off since the Fourth Round draw last Sunday.
“You friends and family see the draw and start talking about it,” said Clayton.
“That is natural.
“It is hard to keep it at the back of your mind.
“We all knew it would be tough against Southend and we had to get the job done.
“We have done it now.
“We have a tough game on Saturday against Tranmere and we will concentrate on that but we will play Chelsea now, there is no denying it.
“It’s the beauty of the FA Cup.
“It will be unreal to be on the same pitch as some of those names but we will concentrate on the game and try to win it.
“We deserve the tie; we will enjoy what comes with it but be professional and focus on the game.”
Harry praised the Brentford supporters for the noise they made against Southend and their support all season.
He said he was proud to hear his name sung from the Griffin Park stands and was enjoying his football.
“It is so enjoyable at the moment,” he said.
“The fans give us an extra lift.
“We have a belief we can do anything and it is great to play at the moment.
“It humbles me when I hear my name sung.
“I’m very proud, long may it continue.
“I hope they continue to come in numbers.”
