George Saville admitted he did not get the best of connections on his strike for Brentford’s second goal against Bradford City yesterday, but was not complaining.
George scored the second in Brentford’s 2-0 Sky Bet League One win at Griffin Park after Clayton Donaldson had scored the first.
Speaking to Bees Player after the match, George said he picked up the ball from Marcello Trotta and shot with his right foot.
Although he did not get a lot on it, the shot had enough power to roll in.
“It wasn’t a very good goal but I will take it,” said the midfield player.
“The important thing was the three points.
“Marcello Trotta came inside and I thought I would take it off him and put it in the corner.
“It was a bad goal, not the cleanest connection but any player will take it.”
George said he thought Brentford produced a good performance against Bradford.
The Bees had the better of the first half without being able to score but got the breakthrough on the hour mark.
George said Brentford ground their visitors down in the first 45 and it was one-way traffic after they got ahead against a team who came to frustrate.
“I think we were good,” he said.
“We ground them down in the first half but couldn’t get the opening.
“The longer the game went on, they got more tired and eventually Clayton got one.
“It was one-way traffic after that.
“We are coming to the business end of the season and teams are looking to get points off the top teams to ensure they stay up.
“We expected that today.
“We need to work on breaking teams down.”
Brentford started with a diamond midfield and switched to 4-3-3 after the break.
George said the systems were similar and the game opened up after the break because that is the natural course of events.
“The first half is always different to the second,” he said.
“The second is always more open.
“Our system worked, the two up front can play off each other.
“It gives space for the full backs.
“We went back to 4-3-3 and that works, as we know it.
“The systems are similar with three in the middle.
“If we get the width right it will work.”
Brentford are third in Sky Bet League One having lost just once in their last 22 league games, against Wolverhampton Wanderers two weeks ago.
They followed that up with a 0-0 draw against Carlisle United and George said that may prove to be a useful point.
George said Brentford were looking to produce a good performance in their next game – against Tranmere Rovers on Tuesday – before they face Leyton Orient, who are second in the table, next week.
“Wolves was an off-day for us, our only defeat in 22 games,” he said.
“Carlisle is a long way, it was a good point.
“We looked at it as two points dropped but that point might help us at the end of the season.
“We are through that now, put in a good performance today, got a win and a clean sheet.
“Now we can look to put in a good performance on Tuesday and look ahead to Orient.
“We will rest and recover and then crack on.”
