Harlee Dean said there was more to come from Brentford after The Bees picked up the first win of the Sky Bet League One season on Saturday.
Brentford beat Sheffield United 3-1 at Griffin Park with Will Grigg scoring two and Adam Forshaw grabbing the other.
The win gave Brentford four points from their first two games and gets their push for promotion underway.
Harlee said Brentford had learned from last season, when they finished third in League One and lost the Play-Off Final, and the squad was improved but they could play better than they did against United.
“We made some mistakes last year, we were young and we have definitely come on,” said the central defender, speaking to Bees Player: Match Day Live after Saturday’s win.
“Our passing has got better and we have learnt how to play League One football.
“We have learnt when to play and when not to play and that has come with the experience of last season.
“We have added quality in positions that needed it and players have improved.
“We will only get better as the season goes on.”
Shaleum Logan also spoke to Bees Player: Match Day Live after the final whistle.
He agreed that Brentford had additional gears to move in to.
“We played really well today but we were comfortable, I am not sure we were really tested in a way where we had to go up a gear,” said the right back.
“If we came up against a team where we had to go up I think we could.”
Shaleum said Brentford knew the visitors were trying to change their style to a team that passed out from defence and through midfield.
He said the hosts tried to press the ball and win it back in attacking areas.
“We watched them this week on the video, they are playing differently to last year,” he said.
“They have been trying to pass it a lot more.
“We knew they would pass it from the back, we had to pressure from the front and we knew we would cause them problems.”
Brentford went a goal up in the first half when Adam Forshaw curled in but the visitors equalised from a corner.
However, Brentford hit back and Will Grigg scored twice to give them the win.
Harlee said defensive organisation was a key factor in the win.
“It was a great result, I am proud of the lads,” he said.
“We were really organised, we did our jobs and did everything as we should.
“We are getting better as a back four.
“The more we play together the more consistency there would be.”
He also had words of praise for Adam Forshaw, who also set up the third goal when Will Grigg turned home after a low shot was saved.
“Adam is a great player,” said Harlee.
“Everyone knows how good he is on the ball.
“He has said he needs to score more goals but that is the same for everyone, I need to score more than last season.
“We are all trying to be better.
“I expect Adam to score goals like that and hopefully he can get a few more.”
Shaleum said Manager Uwe Rösler had encouraged him to join in the attack, like he did at Port Vale last week when he popped up with a goal.
He said the work in pre-season had helped him be able to get up and down the pitch.
“The manager told me there was no reason I couldn’t play like I did against Port Vale,” said Shaleum.
“Pre-season was really tough but I feel everyone has benefitted.
“We are so fit.
“I was always fit but there is so much running in our systems.
“When the left winger gave me space, it gave me freedom to go forward.”
