Jonathan Douglas said Brentford’s second half performance against Crewe Alexandra was as good as anything since he had been at Brentford.
The midfield player joined The Bees from Swindon Town in the summer of 2011 and has played more than 100 games in that time.
The Bees picked their joint biggest league win since Jonathan’s arrival, and under the management of Uwe Rösler, against Crewe.
Marcello Trotta, Adam Forshaw, George Saville and Clayton Donaldson, who got two, were all on the score sheet in a 5-0 win.
Jonathan said Brentford didn’t move the ball as well as they could in the first half but could have had any number of goals after the break.
“The second half is right up there in terms of best performances since I have been here,” said the midfield player.
“We started out OK, created a couple of chances but probably didn’t move the ball as well as we could have.
“The second half performance is one of the best that I have been involved in.
“As a team we started pressing.
“The three lads up front started pressing high.
“That makes our job in midfield easier and that makes the back four’s job easier.
“We pressed them and once we got the second and third it could have been any score.”
Jonathan, speaking to Bees Player after the match, said Brentford’s midfield “rotated” in the second half and took Crewe’s player at the head of a diamond midfield out of the game.
“In the first half they did their homework but we changed it in the second half,” he explained.
“Myself, Adam and George got on the ball and we created chances.
“We rotated more so the big guy didn’t really know who to pick up.
“Overall it was a good performance.
“It was great for the lads in midfield to get their goals.
“Clayton got his two too.”
Brentford’s first goal came just before half time when Marcello Trotta headed home.
They then scored 40 seconds in to the second half through Adam Forshaw.
Jonathan said it was a day when everything fell for The Bees.
“Goals around half time do have more of an impact,” he said.
“We knew they would have a go in the second half.
“To score early on was brilliant and we steamrollered them.
“We are always confident.
“Sometimes thing don’t go your way.
“Today everything fell for us.
“We took the chances.”
Jonathan missed the start of the season after he underwent knee surgery in the summer.
He returned in October and made his first League One appearance against Stevenage.
The Bees were beaten in that match and had a lengthy debrief after the match.
Six wins in a row have followed.
“I don’t think a great deal has changed in a playing way,” said Jonathan.
“Back then we were going through a bad patch.
“Every team goes through one.
“We showed great character to come back from it.
“That’s six on the trot, it is looking good.”
Brentford’s next match is against Wolverhampton Wanderers next Saturday.
They then welcome Peterborough United to Griffin Park on Tuesday November 26.
Jonathan said playing two of the three teams above them in League One would be “massive”.
He recalled when he was at Leeds United in League One and teams would come to Elland Road and play great football, he said Wolves would experience something similar.
Jonathan said Brentford’s players would rise to the occasion and now had to build on their run which had put them in the promotion shake-up.
He said The Bees had to work hard to go one better than last season when they narrowly missed out on promotion.
“It is going to be massive,” said Jonathan.
“They are two massive games.
“We are confident; we are on a good run.
“We have a squad capable of going to Wolves and winning.
“That is what we will try to do.
“A couple of years I was at Leeds and some teams came to Elland Road and played some great football against us.
“It will be no different for them.
“If we play like we did in the second half, we will get three points.
“Everybody rises to those sorts of occasions.
“We have to believe, we have a great bunch of lads and I am looking forward to it.
“We are in the promotion race.
“We are on a good run, we have to keep it going, keep working hard, keep believing and hopefully we will go one step further than last year.”
