Sam Saunders said Brentford made hard work of their npower League One win against Crawley Town.
The Bees picked up three points with a 2-1 win and Sam scored the opening goal.
But it could have been more comfortable.
Crawley had a man sent off inside 50 seconds but Clayton Donaldson missed the resulting penalty.
The striker scored Brentford’s second just past the half hour as the visitors went in at half time 2-0 up.
But Crawley fought back and The Bees had Adam Forshaw sent off in a tense second half.
Sam, speaking to The Bees Player Show after the match, said Brentford hadn’t played well.
“It was horrible to watch at the end,” he said.
“We made it hard for ourselves, it wasn’t a good performance.
“I thought we were disciplined in the first half, we did well and they had a man sent off.
“We had the blow of missing a penalty but we didn’t panic we went again, continued with the game plan and it worked in the first half.
“In the second half we dropped off, we were slack with our passing and we were slow.
“The pressure came and Nicky Adams scored a great goal, the pressure was on.”
Tony Craig also spoke to The Bees Player Show after the match.
He said Brentford had to be happy with the win.
“They made us work,” he said.
“The first half went well but in the second half we made hard work of it.
“This is a hard place to come and we got three points, you have got to be happy with that.”
Sam scored the opening goal when he picked up a Clayton Donaldson pass and smashed in from 18 yards.
He said he was delighted to score his second goal of the season and felt he was back to full fitness, albeit he did wake up yesterday morning feeling a little unwell.
“The game plan was to come in off the line and let Clayton run the channels,” said Sam.
“he did really well there, I came on to the ball, he set it back nicely.
“I just wanted a clean strike and to get over the ball.
“I’m delighted to score and remind people I am still here.
“I didn’t feel I was playing well in the first part of the season and in some games I have felt my ankle injury.
“But it felt good today.
“I feel I have come on and done well in recent weeks and was waiting for my opportunity.
“I got it today, I woke up and didn’t feel great but the goal perked me up.”
Tony praised the finish but said, with a laugh, it had taken a deflection.
He said the goal came at important time and hailed Clayton Donaldson for recovering from the penalty miss to score the winner.
“It was a great finish from Sam Saunders,” said Tony.
“I think it took a nick but I’m sure he wouldn’t have said that.
“The goal came at an important time and gave us a boost.
“Clayton stepped up to take the penalty and he missed, that happens.
“It showed great character to come back later and get a goal.”
Tony said Brentford defended well and he was happy with his form.
He said he wanted to maintain it until the end of the season.
“I am enjoying my football,” he said.
“I came here to play every week and I think that is my 42nd game this season.
“It’s going OK.
“We have a great bunch of lads.
“They have helped me settle in.
“If I can play like this to the end of the season I will be happy.
“It was a good game for a defender, we defended well.”
Sam said Brentford Manager Uwe Rösler wasn’t happy with the performance but the win was all important.
The Bees sit fifth in npower League One, four points off the top with a game in hand on all of those above them.
“The Manager wasn’t happy but we won,” said Sam.
“We have had good performances and drawn in recent weeks.
“The table is tight, the points really matter.
“You can throw a blanket over the top teams.
“We won’t get too high if we win, because we know we can be caught, but not too down if we lose because we know we can catch up.
“We haven’t set points targets we just want to go for every game.
“We are doing something right, we are in the top five with a game in hand.
“If we keep doing it we will be in the mix at the end.
“We have to perform better than we did tonight.”
