Kevin O’Connor said he thought Brentford would look back on the draw at Walsall at the end of the 2013/14 season as a “very good point”.
The Bees drew 1-1 at The Banks’s Stadium on Saturday.
They went ahead on the half hour when Clayton Donaldson headed home but the hosts equalised seconds before half time.
Captain Kevin, speaking to Bees Player: Match Day Live after the draw, said Walsall’s equaliser took the wind out of Brentford’s sails.
He admitted Brentford weren’t at their best but said Walsall deserved credit for their performance and The Bees stood up well defensively to get a share of the spoils.
“First half was fairly even,” said Kevin.
“The timing of their goal killed us a little bit, it took the wind out of our sails.
“In the second half they were very strong and we stood up defensively very well.
“We were aiming to kick on after the goal but we conceded a disappointing goal a minute before half time.
“Walsall are a very good team.
“It was a tough game earlier in the season as well.
“We weren’t at our best but we have to give them credit.
“They played very well.
“We will look back, hopefully having been promoted, and see this as a very good point.”
Kevin said he would need to look at Walsall’s goal again to see exactly what happened.
It came at the end of the first half when Brentford failed to fully clear a corner.
In the third phase a ball came in from the right, Milan Lalkovic headed back across and Craig Westcarr nodded home.
“There were a couple of crosses we half cleared,” said Kevin.
“Then there was a deep one to the back post, they won the initial header and he managed to get in.
“We will look at it again.”
Brentford had won eight League One games in a row before the trip to Walsall.
Although the winning run was ended, The Bees are still unbeaten in 15 Sky Bet League One games.
“We can’t win every game every week three or four nil,” said Kevin.
“Everyone is very positive in the changing room.
“We are slightly disappointed about the way we played but positive that we got the draw, stood up defensively and kept the run going.”
Kevin has played in the centre of Brentford’s defence in the last two matches after not featuring for around four months.
He said he is enjoying the role, and playing alongside Tony Craig.
“Physically I felt better today than I did last week,” he said.
“Another 90 minutes helps.
“I enjoy playing at centre back alongside Tony; he is a very good defender and talks a lot.
“It’s unfortunate we couldn’t keep another clean sheet today.
“I am really enjoying it.”
