Sam Griffiths described Brentford’s victory over Staines Lammas in the Middlesex County Senior Charity Cup First Round as a “very good win”.
The Bees have entered a Development Squad in the competition and won their first game 3-1 last night with Luke Norris scoring twice and Myles Hippolyte getting the other.
Sam, who captained the Development Squad, said Brentford had played “properly” and not taken Staines lightly.
“It was a very good win,” he said.
“We did the job; we were professional and got the right result.
“We came here and didn’t take any liberties, we did it properly.
“We scored the goals and managed the game well.
“We always knew we would be technically better, have better movement and we showed that, especially in the second half.
“Our fitness showed in the second half.
“We did what we had to, kept the ball, did it right.
“We moved it quickly when we could and that helped us move the ball up the pitch.”
Brentford went ahead when Luke Norris scored from close range but were pegged back when a free kick was allowed to travel to the far post and Marcus Mwanza scored.
Myles Hippolyte restored the lead, although it may go down as an Adam Ridley own goal and Brentford scored a superb third when Alfie Mawson’s raking pass was controlled by Josh Clarke and he cross for Luke Norris to score.
“Their goal was disappointing,” said Sam, speaking to Bees Player after the match.
“There was a lack of organisation at the back.
“We will learn from it.
“Our third goal was a great goal, it killed the game, took the pressure off and from then on we managed the game well.”
Sam has been every present in Brentford’s Development this year as they have challenged at the top of the Under-21 Professional Development League Two South.
Injuries in the First Team squad and the quality of performances at Development Squad level meant Antonio German, Emmanuel Oyeleke and Aaron Pierre were named as substitutes for the npower League One game against Carlisle United on Saturday.
Sam, who has played alongside Aaron Pierre in the centre of defence in most games this season, said he was pleased for his fellow defender and wanted the same for himself.
“The season has gone well,” he said.
“Personally, I feel I am going in the right direction and doing well.
“I just need to push on now and try to get in and around the First Team.
“I am delighted for Aaron.
“It is good that the gaffer [Uwe Rösler] is giving the young lads a chance, pushing us through.
“Hopefully I can get myself up there too.”
