Charlie Adams admitted it wasn’t nice to see Uxbridge’s players celebrating after winning the final of the Middlesex County Senior Charity Cup, which supports the charity Help for Heroes, on Thursday.
The Bees were 2-0 up at half time but conceded five without reply in the second half to a rampant Uxbridge side.
Charlie, speaking to Bees Player after the match, said the more experienced Uxbridge side did what they had to win.
“It’s not nice to see the other team pick up the trophy,” said the midfield man.
“It doesn’t matter what level it is or what game it is.
“We were on the wrong end of it today.
“At half time we wanted to keep doing what we were doing, maybe play out a bit more.
“At this level, especially in a cup final, it is about winning.
“They did what they had to do to win.
“They got physical, they played balls in behind us and they did what they had to do.”
The game was played in driving rain and a strong wind.
The Bees had it in the first half and went in 2-0 up at the break as Josh Stockwell made one, put through his own net by Mark Dennison, and scored the second.
Uxbridge had it in the second and stopped Brentford playing.
Charlie said as the rain came down and the pitch cut up further the extra strength and experience of the Uxbridge players came to the fore.
“In the first half we were on top,” said the midfield player.
“We had the ball a lot and we had the win on our side.
“In the second half the wind was against us.
“They had a six foot two centre forward and our tallest player in defence was probably about five foot eight.
“It did show.
“The pitch didn’t help us.
“That was poor and the conditions didn’t help us.
“We tried to play but got caught.
“We won’t blame the conditions but it was a factor.
“They had some experienced guys out there.
“We have to graft out games like this.
“It is a big learning curve for us.
“Cup finals are there to be won, we need to learn that.”
As well as the cup final appearance, Brentford finished fourth in the Under-21 Professional Development League Two South in the 2012/13 season.
Charlie said the group had stepped up this year.
“I think the Development Squad has done really well this year,” he said.
“Last season we struggled to win games.
“This season we have shown what we are about.
“We stepped up to the plate.
“We were playing Championship and Premier League sides and showed, on our day, we are a top side.”
Charlie has been a central figure for the Development Squad this year, scoring seven goals in 19 Professional Development League appearances and setting up many more.
He made his Football League debut in a match against Carlisle United in June and has been offered a new two-year contract by Development Squad Manager Jon De Souza and Academy Director Ose Aibangee.
He said his intention was to sign up for two more years and Manger Uwe Rösler had given him pointers on what he had to do to kick on.
“It is a year to remember for me,” said Charlie.
“I made my First Team debut at Carlisle.
“It was a good day for me, even though we lost, and the future is bright.
“I have been speaking to Jon and Ose about the contract.
“I am flattered by it.
“It is important to think about it, you don’t want to jump in to it, but I will take it.
“I am happy here.
“The gaffer has given me points on where I need to improve.
“I will go out in the off-season and pre-season and work.
“I will show him what I have got, show him I am mentally strong and play in the First Team.”
