Brentford Manager Uwe Rösler said his team produced a “good performance” in beating Bristol City last night.
Substitute Sam Saunders came off the substitute’s bench to score the opener with just over ten minutes remaining and set up Clayton Donaldson for the second.
City pulled one back late on but Brentford took the win.
The home side dominated the first 30 minutes and Uwe said City played well in that period but pointed out a strong wind made it difficult for The Bees.
He said Brentford were the better team after half time.
“Bristol City started very well,” said Uwe, speaking to the media after the match.
“From the side lines you couldn’t tell how strong the wind was but they couldn’t get out of their half in the second half so I felt the wind played a part in the first half.
“We were on the back foot.
“We got better at the end of the first half; we passed the ball a bit better.
“The game calmed down a little bit.
“We weathered the storm and defensively we were very good.
“In the second half we were the better team.
“Overall it was a good performance.”
Although City had a lot of possession Richard Lee, in the Brentford goal as David Button was injured, only made one save, from a looping deflected effort, before the home side scored in stoppage time.
Uwe admitted he would have liked more control of the game but praised his defence.
The win was Brentford’s second in three days, the first time they have won two successive Sky Bet League One games this season.
“Everybody dug in well,” he said.
“I would have liked to have had a bit more control.
“The wind played more of a role than I could see.
“We were under pressure but we restricted them to shots from outside the box.
“That tells a lot about the back four but also in midfield and up front.
“Everyone wanted to keep the momentum going.
“We are now over the second hurdle.
“Now we move on.
“It is a good day for the team, a confidence boosting day.
“It is also a good day for our away supporters, they were magnificent as always.”
Sam Saunders came on with 15 minutes remaining to replace Kadeem Harris.
Uwe said Kadeem, making his first start after arriving on loan from Cardiff City after appearing as a substitute when The Bees beat Colchester United on Saturday, was getting used to First Team football and tired during the match.
Uwe said Sam was “brilliant” and hoped all his substitutes could have the same impact.
“Sam Saunders is an important player, that is why we gave him a new two-year contract in the summer,” said Uwe.
“At the moment he is reaching the form he had last year when he influenced a lot of games from the bench or from the start.
“I am happy with his contribution.
“I want our substitutes to impact the game.
“It is important we get impulses from the bench.
“Today, Sam Saunders was brilliant.”
