Brentford Manager Uwe Rösler said his team lost to Leyton Orient last night because they made the first mistake.
The Bees were beaten 2-0 by the East London side, who have now when their first eight Sky Bet League One games.
Uwe, speaking after the match, said his team did a lot of things right but did not put their chances away.
Brentford had the better of the first hour, and seemed to be in control, when Shaleum Logan conceded a penalty.
David Mooney, who won the spot kick, scored from 12 yards and Shaun Batt sealed the win late on.
“We did a lot of things right but we didn’t score when we should have scored,” said Uwe.
“The game turned out exactly as I expected.
“At half time I thought we looked good, we were strong and dominant and we created better chances and more chances.
“But I told the players the team that made the first mistake would probably lose.
“To make the mistake, not even forced, was the disappointing thing.
“It came from a long ball.”
The penalty came when Harlee Dean and Kevin Lisbie challenged for a high ball and it beat them both.
Mooney got goal side of Shaleum Logan and after a tussle referee James Linington pointed to the spot.
“Shaleum was all over him in the first phase,” admitted Uwe.
“He then let go and Mooney was holding and fouling our player and went down.
“I don’t know what the referee did and didn’t see.
“The referee had the chance to give the penalty and that should have been avoided from a long kick.”
Brentford played the same team that started the 4-3 win against Tranmere Rovers last week except for George Saville, who had a hip injury.
He was replaced by Martin Fillo.
Uwe said he brought on substitutes Joao Teixeira, Marcello Trotta and Stuart Dallas to try and get a goal but Brentford did not play well enough after they went behind.
“We have been forced in to changes in defence and in midfield this season because of injuries,” said Uwe.
“Everyone today was the same as against Tranmere except Martin Fillo came in for George Saville.
“George has a hip problem.
“The game was open when we went behind and I made the substitutions to get a goal.
“Joao came on first and then I thought we needed to bring on Marcello Trotta because we wanted to get a creative midfield player on behind the strikers.
“If we had brought on Farid El Alagui we would have gone long.
“After we went a goal down we didn’t do things right.
“We got nervous and played too many long balls.
“We didn’t get enough out of Joao, we wanted him to unlock the door but we didn’t use him well enough.”
Brentford have 12 points from their first eight games – the same as in 2012/13 when they finished third in the table – but Uwe admitted this was below what he wanted.
He said defensive mistakes were a concern.
“I was asked before the game how the start of the season has been,” said the Brentford boss.
“I said ‘ask me after the game’.
“We are not where we want to be.
“We have to keep trying.
“We had a problem of creating lots of chances and being the better team but not winning last season as well.
“At the moment I am more concerned about the other end.
“If you create chances you will score eventually.
“Every mistake gets punished at the moment and we are making too many.”
Brentford’s next game is away to Coventry City on Sunday.
Coventry are currently playing their home games in Northampton and were deducted ten points at the start of the season.
They have earned 14 points this term to leave them with four in total and their 22 goals from eight games are the second best in the division.
But they have conceded 16 – only four teams are worse – and lost to Port Vale on Saturday.
“I saw Coventry against Port Vale,” said Uwe.
“In the first half they were excellent.
“In the second half they were awful.
“I don’t know what we will get.”
