Jonathan Douglas said Brentford’s 1-0 win over Preston North End was the “right result”.
The Bees looked set for a home draw before Sam Saunders won and then converted a penalty in stoppage time.
Jonathan, speaking to Bees Player after the match, said Brentford deserved it on the balance of play.
He said The Bees had to change their style due to the condition of the pitch but adapted well.
“I think it was the right result, given our play overall,” he said.
“We had most of the possession, we pinned them in their half.
“In the end I think it was the right result.
“We worked on getting the ball forward as quickly as possible.
“The pitch does not help us at the moment.
“We can’t play our normal game and pass the ball so we have to adapt.
“We have two lads up front who will score goals, cause teams problems, the quicker you get the ball to them the better.”
Jonathan said Brentford had worked for two days on how to play against Preston.
The Bees had to abandon their normal passing style and play in a more direct fashion against North End.
They created numerous chances and tested Declan Rudd in the Preston goal before eventually finding the winner.
Jonathan said the planning of Manager Uwe Rösler was key to the win.
“We work on it in training,” he said.
“The manager is a perfectionist; we have been working on how we want to play for the past two days.
“How we wanted to press them when they had it and how we wanted to attack.
“It’s not as if we just turn up on a Saturday and try to do it.
“The manager wants everything done spot on and it’s credit to him as well.
“The lads battled well and the three points was well deserved.”
Brentford started with three in the centre of midfield and Sam Saunders in the hole behind the strikers.
They then switched to a more flat 4-4-2 in the second half when Preston matched them up.
Jonathan said that showed the adaptability of the squad and added with The Bees battling at the top of the table, the result was all important.
“On a pitch like that you have to work to your advantages,” he said.
“We had Sam Saunders in the hole; we were trying to get him on it.
“We created a couple of chances.
“The second half probably didn’t start how we wanted.
“They had a bit of possession but we showed great character, kept going until the end and got the points.
“We have a good squad, lads that can play in a lot of positions.
“We can change it if we need to and we did today.
“It is all about three points.
“Everybody wants to play nice football, create chances and win that way but we have to win whatever way we can.
“Today we went long, picked up second balls and played in their half.”
Jonathan said special praise for Sam Saunders.
The attacking midfield player was Brentford’s fulcrum and won a penalty after he was fouled by John Mousinho before picking himself up to smash it in.
“Sam Saunders has been great all day,” said Jonathan.
“He has been picking up the second balls and causing them problems.
“It was great for him.
“He has worked hard when he has not been in the team and I’m delighted for him.
“He is a good lad around the dressing room, the lads all love him and it was great for him.
“It takes bottle to take a penalty in that situation but Sam is not short of confidence.
“He is great from dead ball situations.
“Last year he missed one but that’s two he scored now this year.”
Brentford moved up to second in npower League One with the win.
They are ahead of Sheffield United, who they play away from home in their next fixture on Saturday, and two points behind Doncaster Rovers.
“Sheffield United are just behind us now,” said Jonathan.
“We went there last year with nothing to fear.
“We will go there, play our football and try to beat them.
“We have a couple of days off now, we can relax, go away from football for a couple of days, come back in and get ready to go.”
