Clayton Donaldson said Brentford’s 4-3 win away to Tranmere Rovers was a game that “had everything”.
The Bees won 4-3, their first away win of the 2013/14 Sky Bet League One season, on a memorable afternoon on Merseyside.
Clayton scored two and Martin Taylor scored less than two minutes in to his debut but Tranmere came back from 2-0 and 3-2 down to level at the death.
However, Brentford got a stoppage time penalty that Adam Forshaw smashed home to win the match.
Clayton said the points were all that mattered to The Bees
“The game had everything,” he said.
“We were leading, comfortably, and then gave the lead away.
“We then took the lead again, they equalised and we got a last minute penalty.
“It must have been great for the fans, well our fans anyway.
“We took them through a crazy game but we got through it at the end and got the points.
“That is what we wanted.”
Clayton said Brentford started the game well but stopped doing what they had been doing to take a 2-0 lead.
The striker said Tranmere scoring just before half time was a blow and The Bees had to start again when the host equalised just after the break.
He said Brentford needed to get the ball in the box more, as was proved when he headed in a Shaleum Logan cross for the third goal.
“The first 25 to 30 minutes, we set our stall out and it was working,” said the striker, speaking to Bees Player after the match.
“Everything was fine but we stopped doing what we had been doing.
“They got hold of the game, got confidence and their fans got behind them.
“We knew we were under the cosh.
“To concede just before half time was a big blow.
“They got an equaliser and we had to start again.
“We started to play and needed to get the ball in the box more.
“We had to get opportunities to score.
“That is what happened with the third goal.
“If we had done that all through the first half, we’d have been more comfortable.”
Clayton spoke about his two goals.
The first came when Ian Goodison cleared an Alan McCormack cross, the second was a far post header.
“The first one, the defender cleared it and I reacted quickly,” he said.
“It caught the keeper off guard.
“For the second I was tussling with the full back, we both wanted the inside position.
“The ball came in; I was stronger and had the opportunity to get my header in.”
Brentford were awarded a last minute penalty for the fourth time in their last 22 competitive games.
Will Grigg, who has taken Brentford’s only penalty this season, had been substituted and Clayton said Manager Uwe Rösler took control from the bench.
The striker said no goalkeeper would have saved Adam Forshaw’s spot kick.
“When the referee pointed to the spot we were back in the situation again,” he said.
“The manager signalled that Adam Forshaw was going to take it.
“Any problems went away then.
“There was no way anyone else was going to take the ball.
“We had confidence in him.
“The keeper gambled on going right and he put it in the roof of the net.
“No keeper would have saved it.”
Brentford’s first away win of the season came a week after their first defeat of the league campaign, a 4-0 reverse against Bradford City.
Clayton said that result “wasn’t Brentford” and the players knew they needed to win at Prenton Park.
The Bees are next in action on Monday September 23 when they face a televised clash with Leyton Orient, who have won their first six games and are top of the League One table.
“The main thing after a defeat is to bounce back as quickly as possible,” said the striker.
“It’s tough coming away from home because you’d probably take a point.
“With the manner we lost last week, we thought we needed more today.
“It was a heavy defeat, it wasn’t Brentford.
“Our away record hasn’t been the best and this is a good place to start to put that right.
“Leyton Orient have won six on the bounce.
“It was good for us to get a win.
“Both teams will be confident.
“It will be a good game.”
