Stuart Dallas said he and his Brentford teammates were disappointed to only take a point from their Sky Bet Championship opener against Charlton Athletic.
The Bees dominated large periods of the first-half but found themselves behind after an hour as Igor Vetokele headed home from close range.
It took until five minutes from time for Brentford to level things as Tommy Smith smashed home from 12 yards, with the aid of a deflection.
Mark Warburton’s side could have snatched all three points, in their first second tier game since 1993, as Alan Judge’s late free-kick crashed off the bar.
Speaking to Bees Player after the game, Stuart said that it was important for The Bees to get something from their opening game.
However, he felt that the three points were there for the taking against The Addicks.
“I think we definitely deserved a point out of that,” said Stuart.
“We are sort of disappointed with a point.
“We came out flying and we were doing what we do best.
“After that we maybe took our foot off it a little bit but we have got a point out of it and we are looking forward to Tuesday now.
“You could see at the end of the game when we got back into it that we were still pushing for a winner.
“A point is not a bad result but it shows what we are all about that we are disappointed with a point.
“In saying that they have had a great chance to go 2-0 up and that could have killed the game.
“Thankfully for us it didn’t go in and we got back into the game which shows great character.
“With that chance not going in it spurred us on.
“If it had gone in it could have killed the game off but it didn’t and we showed great character to get back into the game.
“When we did score we kept going looking for that second one.
“Right up until the 93rd minute we were running for balls.
“We have got to try and win our home games and take it from there.
“Today is not a bad result because they are a good side and it gets us off the mark.”
Stuart was one of a number of Brentford players playing their first game in the second tier of English football on Saturday.
The 23-year-old was playing amateur football in Northern Ireland just over two years ago before joining The Bees from Crusaders in 2012.
Having taken a little time to settle in English football Stuart established himself as a first-team regular at the end of the 2013/14 season starting six of the final seven games during the promotion winning season.
Stuart said it has been a great journey over the last two years and he is keen to add another chapter in the Championship.
“If you look around the squad there are quite a few of us who haven’t played at this level before,” said Stuart.
“Then there are guys like Jonathan Douglas, Alan McCormack and Alan Judge who have done it in the Championship before.
“We were chomping at the bit to get going.
“This is what you work hard in pre-season for.
“We are just happy that it has come about and that we have got off the mark.
“Obviously the Championship is a step up from League One but if we do what we do best then we have absolutely nothing to fear.
“It is good to be playing especially from where I came from three or four years ago.
“To play in The Championship I have had to make a big step up which is great credit to the coaching team for getting me ready for that.
“I was relishing today and hopefully I can kick on.”
