Shaleum Logan said Brentford deserved their memorable npower League One Play-Off Semi-Final victory over Swindon Town.
The Bees, having drawn the first match of the tie 1-1 in Wiltshire on Saturday, raced in to a 2-0 lead in the Semi-Final Second Leg on Monday.
They then went 3-1 up just after half time but the visitors hit back, levelled in the 95th minute and took the tie to penalties.
Brentford’s eventual victory, 5-4 on spot kicks, left Shaleum almost speechless when he spoke to The Bees Player Show after the match.
“We don’t do things by halves,” he said.
“At 2-0 I thought we had to get to half time and then go and see the game out.
“They scored and put us on the back foot.
“Swindon gave it a good go, to be fair to them.
“They gave a great account of themselves.
“For it to go like that, win on penalties, I feel it is our year.
“It is a victory we deserved.”
Brentford’s season has been defined by penalties.
They missed six during the regular season, one of which was hit against the crossbar by Marcello Trotta in the 95th minute on the final day of the regular season against Doncaster Rovers when Brentford would have been promoted if he had scored.
Kevin O’Connor scored from the spot in the first leg and Brentford converted all five in the shoot-out.
Manager Uwe Rösler chose the five and Shaleum praised Sam Saunders, Paul Hayes, Harlee Dean, Tony Craig and Adam Forshaw for their penalty taking.
“It’s mad how football works,” he said.
“We missed a penalty in the 93rd minute to take us up but score five here today and not one looked like missing.
“Even defenders, who people wouldn’t have thought of, did it well.
“The Manager made his decision and all five struck them well.
“If you score, it is a great pen.
“Everyone was confident in the five; they all wanted to do it.
“Adam Forshaw is a guy you want to take a penalty to win a game.”
Shaleum was also full of praise for Marcello Trotta, who played like a man possessed as the lone striker against Swindon.
“Trotta is an unbelievable footballer,” said Shaleum.
“Last week would have hit him hard but he came in to training and there were no hard vibes.
“Nothing against him, he just took a penalty.
“He won everyone over today.
“He put in a real effort today.
“He might score the winner at Wembley and he’ll be a Brentford legend.”
