Sergi Canos said he will always be grateful to the Brentford fans for the support they have given him and his family during his time in TW8. The 19-year-old joined The Bees back in September and quickly became a fans favourite with his enthusiastic, all-action displays. The relationship with the fans wasn’t a one-way street with Sergi spending many hours working with Brentford FC’s Community Sports Trust, work that saw him awarded the Community Player of the Year award at Sunday’s end of season awards.
Speaking to Bees Player after picking up his award Sergi said: “I am really grateful to the fans and appreciate what the fans did for me and my family. When my Uncle was in the stand and they took the Spanish flag it was amazing. It has been an amazing year for me and I am very thankful for everything. This year was the first time that I could enjoy when a kid comes to me and wants a photo or an autograph. That has been amazing and means a lot to me. I think I showed to the fans that I am always playing with a smile. I always try to be good with them as they are good with us.”
As well as picking up the Community Player of the Year award, Sergi was also the runaway winner of the Goal of the Season prize for his stunning individual strike away at Reading in December. Sergi admitted that he knew what he wanted to do when Ryan Woods’ pass reached him but didn’t think it would come off as well as it did.
“I remember that goal at Reading every day if I am honest,” said Sergi. “I have seen that clip about a thousand times. My family is so proud about it and so am I. It was a great moment for me. I always wanted to do what I did but I didn’t expect for it to become real. It became real so I am really happy about that.”
Before joining The Bees last September, Sergi had never played a professional football match and he felt his time in the Championship had taught him how to play true football. The Under-19 international wants to make his mark back at parent club Liverpool and break into the first-team there but didn’t rule out a possible return to Griffin Park.
“I have played football for my last 15 years but it wasn’t this football,” said Sergi. “It wasn’t Championship football and I am really happy with what I did this season and hopefully I can do this again. Hopefully it is a see you soon. I learned a lot at this club and this experience has been amazing for me. I want to translate this to Liverpool and get into the first-team but, if the club says I am not ready yet, I would love to come back and do my best again.”
