A turbulent season on the pitch came to an end in the best possible way as Huddersfield Town were thrashed 5-1 at the John Smith’s Stadium on the final day of the season. Sergi Canos netted his seventh of the season inside the first 25 seconds but, despite dominating, The Bees were pegged down early on in the second-half.Parity lasted two minutes for The Terriers as Scott Hogan raced clear to net his sixth goal of the season, before adding another ten minutes later. Lasse Vibe lashed home to join Alan Judge on 14 goals for the season before John Swift put the icing on the cake with a fifth goal late on to mean The Bees joined Brighton and Hove Albion and Burnley as the league’s top scorers.
Alan Judge picked up another three awards to add to his collection at the club’s Player of the Year dinner. The Irish midfielder picked up the Players’ and Supporters’ Player of the Year awards as well as sharing the Brentford Travel Club Player of the Year award with David Button, who won the Bees Player Moment of the Season for his incredible save against Preston North End. Sergi Canos’ took the Goal of the Season prize for his stunner against Reading and was also awarded the Community Player of the Year gong.
At the end of the season young defender Josh Clarke was offered a new deal at the end of his contract while young goalkeeper Mark Smith was informed he would be released. The loan trio of Marco Djuricin, John Swift, and Sergi Canos also left the club at the end of their deals. In staffing news, Chris Haslam stepped up from his role with the Under-21s to become the club’s new Head of Athletic performance.
17-year-old attacking midfielder Josh Bohui was part of the England Under-17 squad that reached the Quarter-Final of the Under-17 European Championships before bowing out to Spain.
For the seventh year in succession the club picked up a Football League Family Excellence Award for the outstanding experience provided for young fans and families. It was also announced that the Club would be withdrawing from the EPPP and Professional Development League system, no longer be running a full Academy system from Under-eight through to Under-21 level. Instead, an elite squad of around 18 players aged 17-21 would compete as an Elite Development Squad with a direct pathway through to the first team.
