After picking up ten points and scoring ten goals in their first four games in April, the last four games for Dean Smith and his side proved almost as profitable as nine goals brought about another nine points for The Bees. At the heart of that run was Scott Hogan. Having missed so much football due to injury Hogan looked like a man on a mission as he made it three goals in just over 20 minutes of playing time as he netted both goals in the 2-1 win over Cardiff City at Griffin Park. Coming off the bench with 15 minutes to play, Hogan volleyed home the opener eight minutes later and then stroked home a second moments later. Kenneth Zohore set up a nervy finish but it didn’t matter as The Bees held on for the win. Alan McCormack’s appearance in the victory over The Bluebirds saw him trigger an automatic one-year contract extension at Griffin Park.
Hogan missed the trip to Stadium:MK four days later but it didn’t matter as his replacement Lasse Vibe scored his sixth goal of the month to help Brentford to a 4-1 win over already relegated MK Dons. Nicky Maynard gave the home side the lead but Sergi Canos hit back with a stunning curling effort three minutes later to send the sides in level at the break. Vibe made it 2-1 early on in the second-half and then goals from Ryan Woods and Jake Bidwell secured another three points for The Bees. Another away trip, this time to Hull City the following Tuesday, didn’t prove as profitable for Brentford as the Play-Off chasers inflicted a first defeat in seven on Dean Smith’s side. Harlee Dean’s own-goal and a close range finish from Mo Diame settled the match in the first-half and it could have been worse had David Button not also saved Adama Diomande’s first-half penalty.
The fans at Griffin Park were treated to a fantastic final home game of the season as local rivals Fulham were comfortably beaten 3-0 to ensure The Bees retained bragging rights over their neighbours. Sam Saunders chipped Brentford into an early lead and it was 2-0 within seven minutes, Hogan scoring on his first Brentford start. The prolific striker then made it five goals in 71 minutes of playing time with his second before half-time as Brentford secured a third local derby win over Fulham in four matches.
There was more good news for Alan Judge as he had a place in the Professional Footballers Association Championship Team of the Season to add to his two Football League awards.
It was confirmed late on in the month that a number of players would be leaving Brentford’s Development Squad come the summer. Audrius Laucys, Aaron Greene, Daniel O’Shaughnessy, and Nik Tzanev would all depart in the summer while Gradi Milenge and Jermaine Udumaga had their contracts cancelled.
