David Button said the timing and manner of Shrewsbury Town’s goal in Brentford’s Sky Bet League One draw in Shropshire left the players more disappointed than they ought to have been.
The Bees drew 1-1 in Shropshire on Saturday, conceding a last minute equaliser.
Brentford had gone ahead when Marcello Trotta reacted quickest to tap home after his penalty had been saved.
The Bees were on top but conceded as the clock ticked past 90 minutes.
Tony Craig’s headed clearance hit Shrewsbury man Tom Eaves and when the ball dropped the striker fired in to the top corner.
David, speaking to Bees Player: Match Day Live after the match, said Shrewsbury had created little in the second half and Brentford expected to hold out.
The goalkeeper said The Bees had played well and it was a sign of their current form that they were disappointed with the draw.
“They didn’t create much in the second half,” said David.
“After scoring we were optimistic we would hold out.
“Their goal came from a throw.
“It fell nicely and it was a decent finish.
“The manner and the timing has made the players more down they we should be.
“On the whole it was a decent performance.
“We are still top and we are still unbeaten.
“It shows how far we have come that we are disappointed to draw away from home.”
The match was played in horrible conditions in Shropshire.
The pitch was wet and heavy and rain ensured it cut up as the afternoon wore on.
A strong wind blew from one end to the other, in to the faces of Brentford in the first half.
David admitted conditions weren’t pleasant but Brentford coped well, particularly in the first half.
He said Brentford Manager Mark Warburton set his team out to play from the back and that helped them.
“It wasn’t a pleasant day for goalkeepers,” said David.
“It was windy and wet.
“With the open stands it was particularly windy.
“It is difficult, you don't play in these conditions every day.
“You have to adjust and take more care.
“It is difficult for judge but you rely on your technique.
“The manager sets us out to play, a lot of our goals come from playing from the back.
“The wind pushed us back, a lot of the first half was in our half, but the lads coped well with the tricky conditions.”
Brentford had the wind in the second half and had the upper hand.
David said The Bees probably didn’t create as many chances as they would have liked but were unlucky not to win given they had the lead late on.
“We knew it would be easier for us to play higher and play in their half of the pitch,” he said.
“We did that but probably didn’t create as many chances as we would have liked.
“We dominated the game and were probably a bit unlucky.”
The draw extended Brentford’s unbeaten Sky Bet League One run to 18 games.
They have won 15 of those and are top of the table.
David said everything was looking good and the competition for places in the squad would be vital between now and May.
“We are in fantastic shape,” said the goalkeeper.
“You can see every day that everyone is hungry and pushing for places.
“That is key, we will need the squad.
“There will be injuries and there will be times when it needs freshening up.
“To have the quality to bring in to the team is vital.
“It is looking good for us.”
