Scott Hogan revealed that there were never any worries in the Brentford dressing room about turning around their recent poor run of form as The Bees picked up a first win in five this afternoon after a 2-1 win over Burton Albion. Scott struck in either half to secure the win which ends a run of four straight defeats.
When asked after the game if the team were relieved to get the win, Scott told Bees Player: “Relieved would imply that we were worried and we weren’t worried. It was perfect today to get the win and the backing that we got today was very good. As players we appreciate that. We were never worried. We are better than a lot of teams in this league and we were always going to get out of it. In the first-half we passed the ball and moved, which they allowed us to do. They never really got near the ball. We could have had a couple more goals. I have hit the post, on another day that bounces the other side. John Egan had a header and he is normally deadly when he gets it on his head. We more than deserved it and we stayed strong at the end. That is how we started the season and what we lost in the last few weeks.”
Scott’s double took him to 13 for the season, behind only Dwight Gayle in the Sky Bet Championship scoring charts. His first owed much to a defense splitting pass from Romaine Sawyers while his second came as he picked up on a half-blocked Josh McEachran pass. The Bees top-scorer is targeting more goals in the coming weeks, especially given the service that he is getting.
“It is nice to have someone up there with me to link up with,” said Scott. “I know how good Romaine Sawyers is and it was a pleasure to play with him today. He sees things that other people don’t see and he sees what I am doing. That showed for the first goal because nobody expected the pass, but I did. I am a bit disappointed that they gave the foul for the third goal as I didn’t touch him. I am happy with two but I thought the third should have stood. I want to be at 17 goals by the start of January. That is my aim now and I want to kick on in the second-half of the season. Another four or five goals in the next five games will make me a happy man personally but we have to win games. If I don’t score and we win five games then I am not bothered. At the moment I am the one who seems to be scoring but we have plenty of players who can score goals.”
This afternoon’s win sets The Bees up nicely for a busy run of five games in 23 days over Christmas and New Year starting with Tuesday’s trip to Bristol City. Scott admits there are some tough games coming up but feels that a few wins will give the table a much different complexion heading into 2017.
“It is a tough period but it is also a good period,” said Scott. “If you pick up a few wins in this period, then the table looks really nice come January. We have got five games before 2 January so if you can pick up three or four wins then the table looks so much better. We will go to Bristol City and try to win the game like we always do. We will turn up tomorrow with the gaffer and nothing will have changed. It will be a new week and that’s how we will take it.”
