Sam Saunders said Brentford dominated Championship side Millwall for long periods of their pre-season friendly win.
The Bees ran out 3-0 victors at Griffin Park last night with Sam scoring the opening goal.
That came early in the second half and Sam, speaking to Bees Player after the game, said Brentford had worn the Championship side down.
Paul Hayes and Stuart Dallas added goals late on and Millwall goalkeeper Stephen Bywater was employed often to keep the score down.
Sam said the performance showed the quality Brentford had and how hard they had worked in pre-season.
“It was a good run out,” said the attacking midfield player.
“The boys looked sharp and fit.
“Millwall are a good Championship side but I felt we dominated for long periods, tired them out in the first half.
“We weren’t quite penetrative enough in the first half but wore them down and got some chances and scored some good goals.
“It was physical but we competed and once the ball was on the floor we were a much better side.
“We showed what quality we have in the team and how hard we have worked in pre-season.
“It’s good that it showed on the pitch.
“It was a good test and we proved we can do the physical side and do it on the floor as well.
“It was good to be involved in.”
Sam’s goal came when Jake Reeves and Paul Hayes worked the ball out to the left, he cut inside and curled the ball in to the far corner.
He told Bees Player he was feeling fit, strong and confident and was ready to fight for a place in Brentford’s First Team.
Sam said he could see the progress the Club was making and had continued to make since he arrived in 2009 and he had worked hard to ensure he wasn’t left behind.
“We played some nice stuff in the first half but didn’t penetrate enough,” said Sam.
“I was delighted with the goal just after half time.
“When we win the ball I try to get wide so I can run on the defender.
“I am feeling good at the moment, I feel fit, strong and confident.
“It felt right to bend it and it went it.
“I hope there are a few more to come.
“I am delighted with pre-season so far.
“I came back fitter than in the past two seasons and I feel sharp, I feel good.
“I have trained every session so far and feel I am in a position to get a starting shirt.
“Once I get it, I need to perform when it matters.
“The Club keep bringing in good players.
“Unless you progress and move with the Club you will get left behind.
“I have been doing my bits because I know how far the Club has come.
“I want to be a part of it.
“It will hopefully be an exciting time to come.”
Sam added Brentford’s players were now fit and ready and wanted a quick start to the League One season.
“We want a good start,” he said.
“We have worked to get that good start.
“It’s a long season but we want to come out of the traps firing.
“We are fit now, the boys are feeling good and sharp.”
