Sam Saunders admitted he got a little bit of luck with Brentford’s opening goal against Bristol City on Tuesday night, but said it made up for previous misfortune.
The wide man came off the bench to score the opening goal at Ashton Gate.
He then set up what proved to be the winner for Clayton Donaldson as The Bees won 2-1.
Sam, speaking to Bees Player: Match Day Live after the match, said he was delighted to score his first goal of the season and glad Brentford got the win.
“I got a little bit of luck,” said Sam.
“It got a deflection, I was aiming for the other corner to be honest.
“I have had a lot of chances recently where it has slipped wide, hit the post or hit the crossbar.
“I have had some misfortune in front of goal.
“To come on and score a goal, I was delighted.
“I will just keep reminding the gaffer that I want to be playing and it’s nice to knock on the door and help the team.
“We needed back-to-back wins.
“After coming back on Saturday, we needed to continue.
“I am glad we have come here and won.”
Bristol City started the game well and, helped by a strong wind, pushed Brentford back.
They did not, however, test Richard Lee in the Brentford goal and The Bees took the upper hand after the break.
Sam said City did not look like a team that had not won for 20 league games, before Tuesday, and were propping up the rest of Sky Bet League One.
“They are not a bottom of the league team,” he said.
“They played some nice stuff.
“There was a bit of wind and it was backs against the wall at times in the first half.
“We dug in, we got narrow, we filled gaps and tried to push them wide and make them shoot from distance.
“They didn’t hurt us or penetrate us.
“We were the better team in the second half.
“We started to play some nice stuff.
“Luckily enough, I came on and got the goal.”
Sam recovered from injury to come off the bench and make an impact as The Bees beat Colchester United on Saturday and did so again at Ashton Gate.
The wide man picked up a calf injury after a Johnstone’s Paint Trophy defeat to Peterborough United but said he now felt good.
He said he wanted to show Manager Uwe Rösler he wanted to be a regular starter.
“I pulled my calf after the Peterborough game and it put me back a couple of weeks,” said Sam.
“I trained for half a session on Thursday and then on Friday.
“I played half an hour on Saturday and another 20 minutes today.
“I feel good at the minute, I want the ball and I feel I can calm it down when it gets hustle and bustle.
“I want to be out there and will do what I can when I’m out there.”
Brentford go looking for a third straight win against Shrewsbury Town at Griffin Park on Saturday.
Sam said Brentford needed to go on a run.
He called for Brentford supporters to be patient on Saturday and promised The Bees would go beyond the 90th minute to win the game if that is what it took.
“I am looking forward to Saturday and hopefully making it three wins on the bounce,” he said.
“We have back-to-back victories now and hopefully can get another one on Saturday.
“Teams have come to Griffin Park, sat in and been resolute.
“We have had to come up with different game plans and be patient.
“We are trying to play the right way and we need fans to be patient.
“I was here when fans moaned that we kicked it long, now they moan when we play it around, we need a bit of patience.
“When teams come and sit in, if we spread them we will create chances.
“We have to learn to deal with teams that come and defend.
“We have to move the ball quickly and tire teams.
“With the firepower we have on the bench when teams tire there are players that can come on and make an impact.
“If it doesn’t happen straight away, we will go to the death.”
