Sergi Canos believes that Brentford undid all their good work from Tuesday night’s win over Wolverhampton Wanderers as they were beaten by Rotherham United at The AESSEAL New York Stadium this afternoon. Matt Derbyshire put Neil Warnock’s side ahead but Alan Judge levelled just before the break as The Bees were awarded a penalty for a foul on Sergi. However substitute Danny Ward struck the decisive blow 20 minutes from time when he fired home from the edge of the box.
Speaking to Bees Player after the match Sergi said he couldn’t explain the difference in The Bees performance on Tuesday night against Wolverhampton Wanderers and this afternoon. “I have no words to describe what happened,” said Sergi. “We played so well against Wolves and I don’t know happened today. It is a hard result to take. Today we threw away the effort that we put in against Wolves. This is one of the toughest stadiums I’ve been to in the Championship but I have to learn and to be better. I think I made a mistake for the second goal. I had to be stronger on the edge of the box so hopefully I can make it better against Charlton.”
Sergi joined The Bees on a season-long loan from Liverpool in September. The 19-year-old has four goals to his name in 26 appearances for Brentford and that form has seen his called up to the Spanish Under-19 squad as they prepare for Under-19 European Championship qualifiers that will be held next month. Sergi is pleased to be involved in the national set-up but thinks he still has lots to learn in West London.
“The biggest thing for me is to play with the national team and I hope it goes well,” said Sergi. “After today I am a little bit down but I am really looking forward to playing for Spain against Serbia on Wednesday. Coming to Brentford is one of the biggest experiences that I have had so far. For me I need to score more goals and give more assists to my teammates. We also have to win more games.”
Next up for The Bees is a London derby against Charlton Athletic at Griffin Park on Saturday. Sergi has spoken in recent weeks about the great support he and the team have received from the Griffin Park crowd and he is hoping for more of the same against The Addicks.
"I am really looking forward to the game at home to Charlton,” said Sergi. “It was difficult for the fans to be with us today but they were. Hopefully against Charlton they can be the same as they were against Wolves and Queens Park Rangers. It is a London derby so I hope that it is good.”
