Richard Lee has called on Brentford to continue to produce the level of performance they have done in recent matches and insisted results will come.
The Bees have lost their last three matches, after winning seven of eight before that, and entertain Rotherham United at Griffin Park tomorrow.
Brentford are sixth in the Sky Bet Championship and Richard, speaking to Bees Player, said their performances in the three defeats were arguably as good as in the wins they followed.
He said The Bees had not been taking their chances and the squad had looked at the reasons they had lost but were confident they would win if they played like they had been.
“It is a crucial game,” said Richard.
“From our point of view we need to maintain focus.
“There are no guarantees in football.
“Arguably we have played as well in our last three matches as we did in our previous eight.
“We won all but one of those but have lost the last three
“That can happen in football.
“If you don’t put away your chances and they do it can be a very simple game.
“If we play similarly again and create the chances the law of averages is that we will win the game and win it comfortably.
“We have addressed a few things but we don’t want to make a big deal out of it.
“It was three defeats.
“We played well and if we play the same against Rotherham they will do very well to compete with us.”
Richard was speaking to Bees Player after announcing his intention to retire at the end of the season.
The 32-year-old made the decision earlier this season and announced it publically on his blog on January 1.
Richard has been with The Bees since in the summer of 2010.
Although he started the 2010/11 season on the substitute’s bench his performances in Brentford’s runs in the Carling Cup and Johnstone’s Paint Trophy saw him established as first choice by the mid-way point of the campaign.
Richard’s penalty shoot-out expertise helped The Bees win four spot kick contests in his first season at the Club and although he missed the end of the season – and Brentford’s appearance in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Final at Wembley – he was named Supporters’ ‘Player of the Year’.
He has suffered with shoulder injuries over the past few years and has not played a First Team match since a Capital One Cup penalty shoot-out win over Dagenham and Redbridge in August.
Richard dislocated a shoulder in early 2011, had shoulder surgery in the summer of 2013 and had a recurrence earlier this year.
He has played 87 games for Brentford in all competitions in approaching five seasons at Griffin Park, 66 of them in the league.
Richard said he decided to retire as he felt he could no longer get to his best.
“When I do something I like to do it to the best of my ability,” he said.
“That was the main reason I retired, I feel I can’t do this to the best of my ability any more.
“I have four more months here and I don’t want to finish in a bad way.
“There is a chance I may play again at some point this season and if I do, I will never forgive myself if I can’t do myself justice.”
Richard was a substitute in Brentford’s last match – a 2-0 defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion in the FA Cup.
It was his first involvement in a match day squad since August.
“It was a shame to lose,” said Richard.
“On the balance of play and chances we should have won.
“I loved being back out there, even on the bench, and being involved was nice.
“I will miss the match day environment.
“A cup run would have been nice, maybe a big draw and a game against a Premier League team would have been nice but it wasn’t to be.”
