Bradley Wright-Phillips said the true value of his late equaliser against Sheffield United will only be known at the end of the season.
The Bees looked as if they would be beaten in South Yorkshire as they trailed 2-1 going in to the last minutes.
But Bradley popped up with an equaliser to give Brentford a share of the spoils on a night of high drama.
Brentford had gone ahead when Marcello Trotta scored from the penalty spot but Tony Craig was sent off for violent conduct, seen only by the assistant referee, and although the home side missed the penalty they equalised from another soon after.
Dave Kitson put the hosts ahead but they were then reduced to ten men when Brentford were awarded a second penalty but Sam Saunders’ effort was saved.
Clayton Donaldson was then sent off for a second booking – the first one for simulation when he appeared to have been fouled and the second for an innocuous foul – but Bradley earned nine-man Brentford a point.
The striker, who has scored four in his last three games, beat Neill Collins to a long ball before slotting home.
He said he knew Brentford needed at least a point from their trip to South Yorkshire and the true value of the goal would only been know once the season was over.
“I think we will see how big a goal it was at the end of the season,” said Bradley.
“We couldn’t get any less than a point today.
“We managed to get it.
“When you come on and we were down, I think we had ten when I came on, you know you are looking for one chance.
“I knew he must have been tired and I gambled.
“It was a quality moment.
“The Sheffield United fans were giving me and Sam Saunders a bit of stick, as well as the rest of the players.
“It was great to have something to celebrate.”
Bradley said it was a good game to be involved in but the red cards spoilt it a little.
He said Brentford were made to pay for being roughed up for a few minutes in the second half.
“Sheffield United are a big club, they are a good team with a great stadium and have a great support behind them,” said the striker.
“It was a good game.
“The atmosphere was great, our fans were singing non-stop.
“The red cards spoilt it and we ended up fighting for a point.
“They played long balls up to Dave Kitson, it started working and he caused us trouble.
“We let them rough us up for a few minutes and it cost us.”
Brentford are now unbeaten in four having drawn with Coventry City, won comfortably away to Crewe Alexandra and scored two late goals to come from behind to beat Portsmouth on Saturday.
The Bees are third in the table, a point behind AFC Bournemouth and three behind leaders Doncaster Rovers.
If Brentford win their last two games, allowing for perhaps needing to beat Doncaster by sufficient margin on the final day of the season to overturn a goal difference deficit, they can clinch automatic promotion.
Bradley said Brentford wanted to have their fate in their hands when they left but he was disappointed they didn’t win the game.
“We have showed against Portsmouth that we have strength of character,” said the striker.
“We don’t worry about that.
“Even with nine men we thought we would get a chance.
“I think everything happens for a reason.
“I hope these late goals give us automatic promotion.
“We wanted to make sure we still had automatic promotion in our own hands when we left.
“I am a bit disappointed.
“We are a better team than them and I think we should have won.”
