Jonathan Douglas said preparation will make all the difference in npower League One Play-Off Final on Sunday.
Brentford will take on Yeovil Town at Wembley on Sunday with a place in the npower Championship at stake.
The Bees booked their spot in the final with a 5-4 penalty shoot-out win over Swindon Town at Griffin Park last Monday while Yeovil defeated Sheffield United 2-1 on aggregate.
Jonathan told Bees Player that with nearly two weeks between the Semi-Final and the Final, how the teams prepare for the match will be a deciding factor in the outcome.
“It’s all about the matter of inches – who prepares the best, who gets the right rest in between the games,” said Jonathan, who has lost in three previous Play-Off Finals while at Leeds United and Swindon.
“I think credit goes to the medical staff and the coaching staff here as we prepared right between the [two Semi-Final] games and that was the winning attitude.
“The build-up is probably too long with the fact that we had two games in such short period of time and we’ve had to wait so long for this one.
“It is all about preparing right and we had a couple of days away where we changed scenery and we trained in different places.
“From the Club’s point of view everything is going well, the lads are working hard and we are looking forward to it.
“This is the day and it is all about how we prepare.
“I’ve had plenty of disappointment at Wembley but this is another opportunity to hopefully get promoted and there’s no better way than with this club, this team and this bunch of lads.”
As part of the Club’s preparation for the Play-Off Final the team enjoyed a training break to Wales.
Jonathan said it was important to get away for a few days especially given how The Bees found themselves in the Play-Offs.
Following defeat to Doncaster Rovers on the final day of the regular League One season – when Brentford missed a last gasp penalty and the visitors broke to score, Jonathan said that the mood in the camp was low.
He added the way Brentford picked themselves up in time to face Swindon, and then win after the Wiltshire outfit scored a 94th minute equaliser to take the tie to extra time, was the mark of a good side.
“I think it was important to have a few days off just to get away from it really,” said Jonathan.
“Leading up to the game everything was hectic even from the Doncaster game and it was all about trying to recover mentally and physically and it was important to get away.
“Initially after the game on the Saturday I think everybody was disappointed.
“We had The Big Red Ball on Sunday night and the feedback from that was all positive.
“I think the lads realised that there was still an opportunity to achieve what we had wanted to achieve, to get promotion.
“You are going to have knock-backs in games and the best teams are the ones who get over it quicker.
“Even with that Swindon equaliser in injury time, we still had confidence that we were going to win the game.”
Yeovil did the double over Brentford during the normal season with a 3-1 victory at Griffin Park and a 3-0 victory at Huish Park.
Jonathan said those games would count for little at this stage of the season.
With so much riding on one game, Jonathan said it was important the players relaxed and enjoy the occasion.
“The previous results don’t matter at all,” said Jonathan.
“The lads have belief in our own ability and we finished higher than them in the league.
“We know it is going to be difficult but we are capable of beating them and we would have confidence in beating anyone else in the final.
“They probably have confidence in beating us so it’s going to be a good game.
“This is one game to get promoted and the best team on the day is going to go up and hopefully that is us.
“You have to look forward to days like this.
“It is a chance to play at Wembley and not many people have that opportunity.
“It is just about preparing right in your head and treating it like any other game and I have confidence in the lads and hopefully it is going to be our day.”
