Alan McCormack paid tribute to Brentford Manager Mark Warburton for the way he has kept the players focussed on one game at a time.
The Bees are second in Sky Bet League One with five games to go.
They are nine points clear of third-placed Rotherham United after beating Crawley Town on Tuesday night and need just seven more points to clinch promotion.
Alan said Mark Warburton had kept the squad focussed and everyone was cool and calm.
He said the word promotion was not being discussed and all that was on the agenda was the next game, away to Swindon Town on Saturday.
“We have to keep a cool, calm head,” said Alan, speaking to Bees Player: Match Day Live after the Crawley win.
“The gaffer has been brilliant; he has kept the players focussed.
“We have been looking at one game at a time, concentrating on discipline, and you can see that in our performances.
“We never talk about promotion; all we talk about now is Swindon.
“It is another game where everyone is out to get three points – one game at a time.”
On Tuesday Brentford added three points to their lead over Rotherham by beating Crawley while their rivals lost to Sheffield United.
Brentford dominated the match but scored once – a Jonathan Douglas header just before the hour.
Sheffield United scored a late penalty to beat Rotherham and Alan said he could hear from the crowd that something had happened.
He said Brentford would be trying to win every game and had leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers, who still have to play Rotherham, in their sights.
Alan added promotion was the first target and if Rotherham fail to beat Bradford City on Friday night that could come soon.
“It is nice to see Rotherham get beat,” he said.
“The lads have dug deep, held on.
“It was great to hear the crowd react, we knew something had happened.
“Thankfully, it went our way.
“We may now be hoping Rotherham get something at Wolves.
“Our target is to win every game and we will keep going until the end.
“Rotherham play Bradford on Friday, if they get something and we win on Saturday it will set it up for a nice weekend the following weekend.”
Alan said Crawley played well but admitted their slowing down of play was frustrating.
He admitted Brentford did not play to their top level but said they could learn from it.
“They took lots of time over every throw, goal kick, that does get frustrating,” said Alan.
“We didn’t get angry, we kept patient.
“Credit to Crawley, they played well.
“They pressed us high and rushed us.
“We were a bit anxious at times, we gave the ball away cheaply at times but it is a great win in the end.
“We will learn when to be more composed.
“We know what is at stake, we can taste it, we have to keep going.
“We have to drive forward.”
Alan admitted Brentford got some luck with their goal.
Jonathan Douglas headed Alan Judge’s cross down and it squirmed through the arms of Crawley goalkeeper Paul Jones.
“I don’t know what he was trying to do,” said Alan, describing the header.
“Sometimes you are due some luck, we got it tonight.
“It was much deserved.”
Alan also paid tribute to the Brentford supporters.
“The fans have been fabulous all year,” he said.
“I think they can smell it as we can.
“When that happens the atmosphere is superb.
“We can thank them by putting in performances.
“Sometimes we get beat but we never lack drive and determination.”
