Brentford Development Squad Manager Jon De Souza said his side produced a performance that was “OK overall” as they beat Coventry City on Monday.
The Bees won the Under-21 Professional Development League match 2-1 at their Jersey Road Training Ground on Monday afternoon.
Brentford dominated the first half but only had a goal from Youth Team striker Bradley Clayton to show for it at the break.
Coventry levelled but Gradi Milenge, also promoted from the Youth Team, scored the winner.
Jon said his team missed too many chances in the first half and didn’t play well enough in the second.
“It was OK overall,” said Jon, speaking to Bees Player after the match.
“I was pleased with the first half without thinking we did really well.
“I thought we were disappointing in the second half.
“We had a lot of chances in the first half; hit the post a couple of times and their keeper made some saves.
“We also missed too many chances.
“When you are on top of a game like that you need to make 3-0, 4-0, 5-0.
“Our play was good without being brave enough in posession.
“When we played we were a danger but didn’t take our chances.
“We lacked care in posession early in the second half.
“Our organisation at the back wasn’t great but we didn’t look after the ball well enough.”
Jon admitted it was nice to win but said it shouldn’t have been as close as it was.
“It should never have got to 1-1,” he said.
“It should have been comfortable at half time and even in the second half our standards dropped.
“We are here to develop players for the First Team and part of that is to win games of football.
“It was nice to get three points.”
Brentford put out a team with a mixture of youth and experience.
First Team players Toumani Diagouraga, Nico Yennaris, Jack Bonham and Charlie Adams were in the side along with Clayton and Milenge from the Youth Team.
Another from the Under-18 group, Tom Field, came on as a substitute.
“I was pleased with the Youth Team players stepping up,” said Jon.
“Bradley could have had a couple more goals.
“I am very keen to push players on, they did well.”
Brentford have won one and lost one of their two Professional Development League games this season.
Their next is against Colchester United on September 16 and Jon said he would look to get a friendly arranged before that.
“A lot of our players are lacking match sharpness,” said Jon.
“We are looking to organise a game for next week.
“Beyond that we have Colchester and then a run of games.
“Some of the guys lack game time.
“When you have First Team players coming down you have to find a way to keep players fit.
“We could do with one more game before Colchester.”
