Nico Yennaris felt that Brentford let themselves down after falling to a four goal defeat away at Hillsborough this afternoon. Yoann Barbet was shown a straight red early on for a last man foul on Gary Hooper and The Bees resistance lasted just six minutes before Fernando Forestieri headed The Owls in front. Hooper and Kieran Lee then netted before half-time with Lucas Joao adding a fourth late on to complete the scoring.
Speaking to Bees Player after the match Nico said: “To be honest I didn’t think it was a red card. I thought that he overran it. By the time that he went down the ball was in David Button’s hands. It was a bit harsh especially with it being so early. It killed the game but these things happen. Losing a player so early we had to try and get compact and keep it tight and keep ourselves in the game. Unfortunately we didn’t do that today in the first-half and we had a mountain to climb second-half. We needed to keep a better shape and we can’t concede goals like we did today. We are a lot better than that and we have to keep doing the basics better.”
Nico’s start this afternoon was his first in the league this year and the former Arsenal youngster was pleased to be in the starting XI. The 22-year-old hoped his performance would be enough to see him get an extended run in the side.
“Personally it was nice to start another game,” said Nico. “I played a lot in the central midfield growing up so it was nice to get a run-out in midfield. It was unfortunate with the result but hopefully I have done enough to keep my place. I have always said that I am capable of playing there and I think that it is one of my stronger positions. If I get the nod there then I will do my best to keep my place and do well for the team.”
The defeat means The Bees have picked up just one victory in their last eight and Nico has called on his teammates to get back to work on the training ground and bounce back from their recent defeats.
“We have got to rest and recover now and get back in to the training ground on Monday,” said Nico. “We have to work hard for the game against Derby County next Saturday. We need to have a solid week and bounce back from this. There is enough character in this group to bounce back. We have already shown that this season. When Monday morning comes we will go through those doors at the training ground and it will be back to work. We need to go back to the drawing board and get things back on track.”
