Mageye Gueye scored twice as Brentford let a 2-0 lead slip to draw 2-2 with Millwall at The Den.
Things looked to be going to plan for Lee Carsley’s side as two goals in three minutes from Jermaine Udumaga and Bradley Clayton put The Bees in front midway through the first-half.
However Gueye grabbed his first with a close range header just before the break and he levelled matters midway through the second-period when he calmly slotted home from 12 yards.
Brentford struck a post late on through Courtney Senior as both sides had chances to grab the winner but in the end they had to settle for a point apiece.
Lee Carsley made just one change from last week’s return fixture between the two sides as Jack Bonham replaced Richard Lee in goal.
Neither side was able to take control of the game in the opening few minutes as both sides had chances to open the scoring.
Dylan Casey got a vital touch to turn Senior’s shot over the bar while at the other end it was his cross that was headed just over by John-Prince Rylah.
Rylah shot over from the edge of the box after making space for himself and Daniel O’Shaughnessy warmed the palms of Tottenham loanee Jordan Archer with a rasping drive from 20 yards.
Josh Laurent missed his kick when well placed and a minute later The Bees were let off as Alfie Pavey hit the outside of the post with a close range header.
As the half progressed Brentford began to dominate possession and took greater hold over the match.
Millwall’s wide pair of Gueye and Rylah were pushing on to form a front four whenever possible opening up space in the midfield for Oyeleke, Uduamaga and Senior.
The Bees were overloading The Lions in the middle and this was allowing them time and space to get at the Millwall backline.
Brentford were getting into good attacking positions and it was only a matter of time before they scored .
The goal arrived midway through the half when Senior left Casey for dead on the edge of the box and as the Millwall man desperately tried to make up for his error he clipped Senior, conceding a penalty which Udumaga calmly stroked home.
The hosts had hardly time to take stock before Brentford doubled their lead.
A slick passing move slipped Emmanuel Oyeleke in behind and, although Archer did well to get down and keep his effort out, Clayton reacted fastest to fire home from close range.
Brentford’s confidence was up and they began to pop the ball around with ease forcing Millwall back towards their own box and leaving Pavey as an increasingly isolated front-man.
Despite all The Bees possession and territory they only had an Oyeleke shot to show for their efforts.
The Lions had offered very little going forward but Jamie Philpot hit the side netting from a tight angle a minute before they halved their arrears.
Philpot ran the channel well and his deep cross was met eight yards out by an unmarked Gueye who made no mistake to make the score 2-1.
Millwall had come from 2-0 down in the Sky Bet Championship match back in November to level and had it not been for a strong Bonham hand they would have repeated the trick here as Philpot let fly from 15 yards.
Brentford fashioned a chance to make it 3-1 just before the break when Clayton and Laurent exchanged passes and Archer needed to make a fine save to tip Clayton’s effort over the bar.
From the resulting corner Millwall broke quickly and Bonham needed to be alert to block Rylah’s effort from 10 yards.
Lee Carsley’s side started the second-half brightly and came so close to a superb third as Laurent smacked an effort from 25 yards against the crossbar.
Udumaga pulled a shot past the near post and then shot just wide from 25 yards before Millwall levelled midway through the half.
Gueye was released in behind Greene and he opened up his body and stroked home left footed into the bottom corner from 12 yards.
That goal only seemed to re-focus Brentford and they took the game to the hosts after that.
Lee Beevers hacked off the line as Marsh-Brown’s cross looked destined to be bundled home by Laurent and Zain Westbrooke could only turn Greene’s cross straight into Archer’s arms.
Archer’s next involvement was more spectacular as he managed to push Senior’s fierce low shot onto the post and Wood hacked away as Kyjuon Marsh-Brown closed in on the rebound.
Millwall were trying to play on the break and Gueye was denied a hat-trick as Bonham got down sharply to hold his low shot.
Bonham made an even better save in the dying minutes as Jack Warburton lost out to Philpot inside the centre circle and the Millwall striker drove forward only to be denied by the outstretched leg of the goalkeeper to ensure both sides left The Den with a point.
