Reece Cole's brace wasn't enough to prevent Brentford's Under-17s going down 3-2 to Cherry Orchard in the Milk Cup Premier Section Globe 3rd/4th Play-Off.
The Irish side took the lead in the first minute through Troy Carey but Cole restored parity five minutes later with a fine free-kick.
Carey put the Dublin side back in front before the break only for Cole to level things again with another long-range effort.
As time ticked down it looked only a matter of time before Brentford would take the lead but Orchard delivered a sucker punch with five minutes remaning as Thomas Ilunga capped off a fine counter attack.
Brentford still had chances to take the game to penalties but Lee Doyle was outstanding in the Dubliner's goal and with the final kick of the game Bradley Clayton saw an effort cleared off the line by Joshua Collins.
The defeat means Brentford finish 8th in the Premier Section after three straight losses.
After the sickening defeat against Club America on Thursday, where Brentford conceded twice in injury time before losing on penalties, a good start was important.
However, Orchard had other ideas and took the lead in the opening minute as Carey found the back of the net.
The Bees weren't behind for long as Cole smashed a fine free-kick past Doyle to level things up after six minutes.
Brentford should have gone in front three minutes later but Courtney Senior fired over from 12 yards.
After falling behind Anthony Hayes' side had reacted well and dominated large parts of the first-half without the end product.
Doyle saved from Senior, Jeremiah Kamanzi headed Chris Mepham's deep cross wide and Tom Field shot over from distance.
Cole nearly grabbed a second but Doyle reacted just in time to dive on the ball ahead of The Bees midfielder after he had fumbled Clayton's effort.
Herson Rodrigues Alves was the next to come close for The Bees before Clayton passed up a glorious chance to put Brentford in front, and draw level with Manchester United's Marcus Rashford as tournament top goalscorer on six, as he slide wide of an open goal after Doyle had blocked his initial effort.
And as so often happens The Bees were made to pay for their wastefulness in front of goal as Carey reacted fastest to a loose ball on the edge of the box and poked past Cameron Greaves.
Ilunga could have stretched Orchard's lead before half-time but Greaves was out quickly to save at his feet while Doyle produced an outstanding save to deny Cole his second from long range.
Audrius Laucys was then denied by a combination of Doyle and defenders on the line after a clever free-kick move as Brentford pressed for an equaliser ahead of half-time.
The second-half started as the first ended with Brentford in the ascendancy with Doyle denying Clayton before Senior blasted a glorious chance over the bar from 10 yards.
Field shot straight at Doyle from 25 yards and, after a spell of penalty area pinball from a corner, Seth Owens overhead kick looped inches over the bar.
Rodrigues Alves was the next to be denied by Doyle and the Irish keeper made an even better save to deny Clayton one-on-one before Collins got back on the line to head Courtney Senior's effort from the rebound away to safety.
Eventually Brentford did get a deserved equaliser as Cole left Doyle with no chance, bending a shot high past him from 25 yards.
Substitute Dylan Hamilton-Burke saw his shot turned away by Doyle before the Irish side struck on the counter-attack.
With Brentford pressing for a winner Orchard broke and Ilunga kept his composure to fire low past Greaves from 12 yards with five minutes to go.
Much to the anger of Orchard's manager the Irish side dropped deeper and deeper in the closing stages hanging on desperately for the victory.
Doyle made a great save to deny Courtney Austin from 10 yards before Austin shot straight at him from the edge of the box and The Bees nearly snatched a draw in the dying seconds.
In the midst of a goalmouth scramble Clayton poked the ball past Doyle only for Collins to appear from nowhere to hook the ball to safety
The final whistle was blown as Collins clearance was still in the air meaning an unsuccessful return to Northern Ireland for the 2012 winning side.
