The Fourth day at the 2014 Milk Cup and the day where the fate of both teams would be decided.
A win for the Under-17s would guarantee them a place in the top Cup while an Under-15s win would at least guarantee them a place in the Globe competition for sides finishing 5th-8th.
Both games kicked off later in the afternoon meaning the morning was filled with some well needed Physio clinic work, team-meetings and free-time.
After two tough games in two days physios Lewis Johnson and Rob Sibley were busy men working to get players ready for another day of action.
Wednesday at the Milk Cup also saw the addition of the 51st member of the party as Sean Ridley joined from the club’s media department.
According to Wikipedia Bushmills has a population of 1,319 which means the arrival of the Brentford party had added four per cent to the village’s population for the week.
Both teams ate together before setting off to their respective games which were being played one after another in Coleraine.
The U15s kicked off first in central Coleraine against Co. Down and ran out 4-2 winners, thanks in no small part to a stunning hat-trick from Joshua Bohui.
That result meant that The Bees made it through to finish seventh in the League standings and set-up a mouth-watering tie against Rangers on Thursday afternoon with the winner playing either Southampton or Rangers in the Globe Final.
With such a tight turnaround between games the Brentford coaching and media staff were hoping for a swift departure on full-time.
However nobody seemed to have informed the referee who decided to play 11 minutes added time to the second-half meaning a dash through rush-hour traffic was needed to get to the second game of the day between The Under-17s and Benfica on the edge of Coleraine.
As it happened the media and analysis staff, plus Academy Director Ose Aibangee, arrived 15 minutes into the game only to see Benfica grab the lead after 15 minutes and 15 seconds.
While on the subject of travel a special mention must by made for Graham Ashley, the Academy's transport manager, and van driver for the week.
His week began at 8am on Sunday with the 528 mile drive from London to Bushmills carrying analysis equipment, kit and medical equipment.
Once in Ireland he was vital in helping the analysis and conditioning staff get around to all the games and was another unsung reason why these trips go so smoothly.
On paper the game against Benfica should have seen two footballing sides go head-to-head on a good surface at Rugby Avenue.
However the game panned out anything but that as Benfica went long at every occasion and used more than an element of ‘professionalism’ to frustrate The Bees.
In the end the frustration got too much for some of the Brentford players as Seth Owens was dismissed for a violent conduct and Jordan Carey saw red for dissent after the final whistle.
The 2-1 defeat for Brentford meant that their qualification hopes lay in the balance as they needed Manchester United to beat CSKA Moscow by two goals in the evening’s last game in Derry.
With so much riding on that game most of the coaching staff made the trip to watch the game while the players and medical staff went to the pool for a cool-down session.
By the time the players returned to the Hostel, Manchester United were leading 2-1 and there was hope of making the top cup.
Twitter feeds were being refreshed on a second by second basis hoping to see a third United goal.
The players were like cats on a hot tin roof but when news of a fourth goal did come thorough, it was not the goal any of the players wanted to see as CSKA had equalised.
The game ended 2-2 meaning that The Bees would finish 5th and miss out on qualifying for the top Cup by a point.
The mood was downbeat but as soon as the Under-17s begin their preparations for Thursday’s game against Club America from Mexico you can be sure that they will be back focussed and ready.
