The Season So Far
Sheffield Wednesday go into Saturday’s game off the back of a win at Premier League Newcastle United in the Third Round of the Capital One Cup on Wednesday. A much changed eleven from the one that defeated Fulham 3-2 at Hillsborough beat Steve McClaren’s side 1-0, and landed them a home draw with Arsenal in a repeat of the 1993 League and FA Cup Finals. Their league form has been mixed, with two wins (both at home) from eight league matches, leaving them in 14th place in the Sky Bet Championship. The summer transfer window saw The Owls recruit 16 new faces to the dressing room at Hillsborough. This includes several from the Mediterranean: Marco Matias [Nacional]; FelipeMelo [Moreirense] and Lucas Joao [Nacional] joining from Portugal, plus Fernando Forestieri [Watford]; Sergiu Bus [CSKA Sofia]; Alex Lopez [Celta Vigo] and Vincent Sasso [SC Braga] also have international youth caps for Italy, Romania, Spain and France respectively.
In Jack Hunt [loan from Crystal Palace]; Ross Wallace [Burnley] and Lewis Price [Crystal Palace] they find divisional experience, with well over 350 appearances in the Football League between them. Michael Turner [Norwich City]; Daniel Pudil [Watford]; Rhoys Wiggins [Charlton Athletic]; Darryl Lachman [FC Twente]; Modou Sougou [Marseille] and Barry Bannan [Crystal Palace] were also signed before the transfer window ended.
The club bid farewell to Stevie May and Chris Kirkland [Preston North End], plus Chris Maguire, who joined Rotherham United on a free transfer.
The Gaffer
After almost three years away from the game, Carlos Carvalhal joined Wednesday in the summer and has been in charge for just over three months. The 49-year-old, who spent the majority of his playing career at Braga, succeeded Stuart Gray, who managed The Owls to 13th place in the Championship last season.
This is Carvalhal’s 15th club management job, following spells with Sporting Lisbon, CF Belenenses and SC Braga in his native Portugal. His last position of note was at Turkish giants Besiktas, where he acted as caretaker manager.
