Brentford Manager Mark Warburton said the condition of striker Scott Hogan – who picked up a nasty looking knee injury in the Sky Bet Championship win at Rotherham United – was still to be assessed.
Hogan had been on the pitch for around ten minutes when he crumpled in a heap with no-one near him.
He was taken off on a stretcher with his knee in a brace and left the stadium on crutches after Brentford’s 2-0 win.
“Scott is being assessed now,” said Mark, speaking after the match.
“Our medical team are first class and they will look after him.
“Everyone saw what happened, there was no-one near him.
“Hopefully it is a twisted knee and nothing more.
“We will get him back, assess him and go from there.”
Brentford won the match 2-0 with a goal late in each half.
Andre Gray put The Bees in front at the end of the first half, picking up an Alan Judge pass, cutting inside and firing home.
Nick Proschwitz, who replaced Hogan, sealed the win in stoppage time – tapping in after Jon Toral had weaved his way through the home defence.
Rotherham presented a stern physical test for The Bees, utilising long throws and set pieces, and hit the woodwork twice in the first half.
Mark said Brentford knew what to expect, with the long ball up to striker Alex Revell, but hailed the way central defenders Harlee Dean and James Tarkowski dealt with the threat.
“There were some magnificent performances today,” said the Brentford Manager.
“We knew what to expect, they are a well-organised side, they have some very talented players and a physical presence in Alex Revell with runners going beyond.
“I though Harlee and James Tarkowski were magnificent.
“The two full backs tracked their runners; Jonathan Douglas did a tremendous screening job.
“David Button made two or three tremendous saves; he dominated the box in the second half and looked a class keeper.
“In front of them we did very well, we had some good patches of play.
“We could have been more clinical.”
Mark hailed the work of his analysis team in preparing Brentford for the match.
“They are a narrow team,” said the Brentford boss.
“Our analysis told us that.
“They play in to Revell and look to get runners off, he links up play well and we had to be aware of that, track runners and do our job.
“Our analysts – Neil McIlhargey and Luke Stopforth – did a great job.
“It was a big ask today.
“We won the first balls, won the second balls and played.
“Dougie was disciplined; the temptation is to sit on the toes of the centre half.
“We got the rewards.”
Brentford got their first goal on the counter attack but Mark said his team should have made more of those openings.
“We had four or five breaks,” said the Brentford Manager.
“We looked for the counter attack, pace and use the areas.
“We didn’t maximise it.
“We had overloads that broke down, we must learn from it.”
Mark chose to pick Dean and Tarkowski in the centre of defence despite Tony Craig, who has been first choice for the past two years, being available after suspension.
“My biggest decision today was in the centre of defence and Tony Craig knows that,” he said.
“He has been magnificent for us and will be again.
“It was a tough decision; Tony gives everything for the Club and is a fantastic pro.
“Tony will know push Harlee and James for his place.
“That is the way it has to be.”
Mark praised Andre Gray for his goal.
“It was a tremendous finish,” he said.
“Andre gives us pace and power.
“He is raw and sometimes that gives you a randomness.
“We don’t know what he is going to do and neither do defenders.
“He worked very hard today.
“Andre deserved the goal, he is learning, getting fitter and stronger.”
More than 600 Brentford fans made the trip to the New York Stadium.
“We had magnificent support again, the players went over to a man to show their appreciation,” said Mark.
“They come away and support us in numbers.
“We have to reward them and show every man giving 100 per cent effort.”
Mark updated on the situation regarding Adam Forshaw.
Brentford have accepted an offer from Wigan Athletic for the midfield player but the deal is not yet complete.
“Adam said goodbye on Monday at 7am and went to Wigan,” explained Mark.
“From there I don’t know what has happened.
“It hasn’t been done yet.
“I don’t know what’s going on.”
Brentford do not play again until September 13 when Brighton and Hove Albion come to Griffin Park.
They have two weeks off due to internationals.
“The break will be good for us,” said Mark.
“We have had a tough schedule, playing every Saturday and Tuesday.
“We will train Monday to Wednesday and then have four days off before we prepare for Brighton.
“We have to deal with the breaks and maximise them.
“Brighton are a good football team.
“It will be a different type of game and we have to impose ourselves on it.”
