Brentford Manager Mark Warburton hailed a “great performance” after watching his side beat Leeds United.
The Bees recorded a 2-0 victory over the Yorkshire outfit at Griffin Park yesterday afternoon.
Jota scored the first goal, converting in first half stoppage time, and Alan McCormack raced forward from right back to make it two in the second half.
Mark, speaking after the win, said his side showed great character to beat a team that had won three of their last four games.
“It was tremendous today,” he said.
“It shows the character of these players, to a man they applied themselves.
“We maybe lacked a little tempo in the first five to ten minutes but from that moment we were very good.
“We moved the ball well, showed quality in the final third, we looked tighter at the back.
“The midfield was very good and I was delighted for Jota to get a goal.
“It was a great performance today.
“Leeds are a good team, they have taken 10 points from 12.
“They were on a run of form, we were aware of their threat.
“It was a performance of character and quality.”
Brentford could have won the game more comfortably.
They were awarded a penalty in the first half that James Tarkowski fired over the bar.
The Bees also created a number of other chances before Jota’s goal and then again after the break.
Mark admitted his team could have scored more goals and made the game safe sooner but backed them to put away more chances soon.
“I have never seen James miss a penalty,” said the Brentford boss.
“He stepped up and was unfortunate.
“He is a good penalty taker; I have no worries with that.
“We did really well in the first half.
“We played well and we created chances, the goal was a bonus.
“We created a penalty and had a shout for a second.
“It was a good time to score.
“We always look to get better and maybe we need to be more clinical in front of goal.
“We could have finished the game off in the second half but we didn’t and we will learn from that.
“Sooner or later we will finish the chances we create off.”
Brentford came back from two straight defeats to beat Leeds.
They also kept their first clean sheet since the end of August.
Tony Craig replaced Harlee Dean in defence and Mark explained the decision.
“I am not singling out Harlee but Tony offers us natural left sided balance,” he said.
“Harlee showed his strength and determination when he played but with Tony being left footed we had balance.
“I am delighted with Harlee’s contribution but we must recognise how well Tony did today.
“It was a good clean sheet.
“That is very pleasing and gives confidence.
“David Button was strong and dominant; it was a good all-round performance.”
The Bees had been beaten by Norwich City in their last match at Griffin Park despite dominating but were “punished” at Middlesbrough last week, playing poorly and losing 4-0.
Mark said his side had produced one bad 45 minutes all season, the second half against Middlesbrough when they conceded three, and backed them to continue to make an impact in the Sky Bet Championship.
“We know what happened against Norwich and we have had one bad half all season,” he said.
“The players have been tremendous, we got punished at Middlesbrough but we will learn.
“I believe these players can make a real impression.”
