MARK 'DELIGHTED' WITH PALACE WIN

Brentford Manager Mark Warburton said he was delighted after watching his side end their pre-season friendly schedule with a win over Crystal Palace.

Mark, speaking after the win over the Premier League side, said there were lots of positives to take.

He said The Bees created lots of chances against a strong Palace side.

The game was 0-0 at the break but Jonatan Douglas put Brentford ahead and Andre Gray made it two soon after.

Palace levelled with two quick goals but Moses Odubajo scored a fine winning goal.

Mark said Palace provided a physical test that Brentford stood up to and seven days before The Bees start their Sky Bet Championship season they came through a tough test.

“I am delighted, there were many positives from today’s display,” said the Brentford boss.

“There were two strong teams; it was great to see Crystal Palace bring that level of team here.

“Our new players have settled well, fitness levels were good, we made lots of chances, we showed a real energy and intensity to what we did.

“Palace offered a physical threat – we stood up to that.

“There were many positives, lots of quality and we are seven days away.

“We scored good goals and the only disappointment is that we weren’t more clinical.

“I was delighted with the chances we created.

“We had quality out wide, the build-up play was good.

“It was a tough test against a good Premier League team.

“It was a very worthwhile exercise.”

Brentford won four of their five pre-season games.

They started with wins over Boreham Wood and Barnet before beating OGC Nice last Saturday.

A defeat against CA Osasuna was followed by the Palace victory.

Mark said his side got what they wanted from pre-season, particularly against a strong Palace side brought by boss Tony Pulis.

He added there may be additions to the squad before The Bees start their league season against Charlton Athletic next Saturday and stressed his side wanted to make a mark in The Championship.

“Time will tell as to how well pre-season has gone,” said Mark.

“The idea was to have two foreign tests against teams that keep the ball well.

“They worked hard and made us press, we had to be patient.

“We wanted a high quality, physical, domestic test today and Tony Pulis has brought a top-quality team down here to help us enormously.

“We stood up well, adapted well and produced a fantastic display.

“We have some very good players, we are a young squad, they showed their quality.

“We have come up from League One and we have to make a mark.

“There are some top quality teams in The Championship; we are not making up the numbers.

“We have a strong squad and will add to it.

“We hope to have one or two in this week if it is the right person and it adds value.

“We want competition for places.”

Mark praised the work his side had done in pre-season and said there was only fine-tuning to be done in the next week.

“The players showed today how fit they were,” he said.

“That is testament to the medical and conditioning staff but also to the players.

“They have worked very hard in pre-season.

“The players must take great confidence from their display today.

“We have a week left and we will fine tune, add details and be prepared for Charlton.”

The Bees were without Alex Pritchard for the match and Mark updated on injuries.

“Stuart Dallas got a nasty tackle and came off as a precaution, he will train on Monday,” he said.

“James Tarkowski has a bit of Achilles soreness.

“Alex Pritchard had a tight groin so he was left out as a precaution.”

He also explained why Adam Forshaw was not involved.

“Adam Forshaw was the subject of a bid from a rival Championship club,” said Mark.

“That unsettles any player.

“Adam cares about the game and I have given him a few days to think about things.

“A bid is only a proper bid if it is at the right, realistic value.

“We have had a bid but it is nowhere near our valuation for a player that was League One Player of the Year last year.

“My disappointment is that I don’t know if we have had a genuine bid or one to unsettle a player.

“I have to ask questions.

“The bid is nowhere near the level and I am more disappointed it is an unsettling affect than genuinely try to get him.”

Mark added: “I think we are ready for the season.

“We have had a tough pre-season that has worked out well.

“We have to maximise that pre-season and show the quality we possess.

“Hopefully they will get rewards next week.”
