Brentford Manager Mark Warburton said his side’s first pre-season friendly “went very well”.
The Bees beat Skrill South Boreham Wood away from home yesterday evening.
They went ahead when Kevin O’Connor smashed home a penalty and a Josh Hill own goal put them back in front after Luke Garrard had equalised, also from the spot.
Jake Bidwell rounded off a fine move to make it three late on.
It was the first of five games before The Bees start their Sky Bet Championship campaign against Charlton Athletic on August 9.
The face Barnet away from home next Tuesday, July 22, before home games against OGC Nice, RCD Espanyol and Crystal Palace,
Mark said Brentford were on track for the new season and progressing well after a pre-season training camp in Florida.
“I think it went very well tonight,” said Mark, speaking after the match.
“It was the first run out after the training camp and very pleasing.
“We got a great welcome as always, a fantastic surface and the new guys settled in well.
“It was a worthwhile experience.
“The aim is to be prepared for Charlton.
“We step it up as we get closer to the start with three very good quality home games.
“We are building up nicely.
“So far we are on track.”
Brentford used three of their new signings in the friendly.
Moses Odubajo played on the right of a front three and won Brentford’s penalty.
Andre Gray played 45 minutes up front and his shot was blocked by goalkeeper James Russell before bouncing off centre half Hill and in to the net for Brentford’s second.
Marcos Tébar played an hour in midfield, interchanging with Jonathan Douglas.
Mark said the new players would embrace Brentford’s way of playing and hailed the third goal his team scored when Bidwell finished off a sweeping move that ended with Josh Clarke delivering from the right.
“Moses likes to play deeper, get it and turn, Andre likes to come short for the ball and turn,” said Mark.
“Last year we played with a high line and we need to find a balance between the two.
“We don’t want to stop what they do well but we want to introduce new ideas, they are clever footballers, I am sure they will embrace them.
“Marcos did very well, he went deep, Dougie recognised that and got high.
“Overall it was a very worthwhile experience.
“Jake’s was a nice move, a good finish and a really nice piece of football.
“The surface here was good, which allowed us to do it.”
Brentford used 21 players on the night.
Charlie Adams played 75 minutes while Tébar, Odubajo and Stuart Dallas played an hour and most others played 45 minutes.
“We planned the game today in terms of how long everybody would get,” said Mark.
“We had guys stay on for the hour.
“I am very pleased with the way it worked.
“There were times when it was slicker than others.
“Second half the intensity and tempo rose.
“I am pleased overall with the full 90 minutes.”
Mark said Brentford were making progress in the quest to bring a striker in to the squad.
Yesterday Alex Pritchard joined The Bees on loan from Tottenham Hotspur.
Mark said ideally everyone would have been in before the start of pre-season training but sometimes patience was required to complete a deal.
“I have watched Alex since he was nine or ten, I know him well,” said Mark.
“He is technically gifted, competitive and with great dead ball delivery.
“I am pleased to get him; lots of clubs were in for him.
“We are making good progress on the striker front.
“Alex came in today, we may get one or two more and the squad is in good shape.
“In an ideal world you have everyone in from June 25.
“The players we will get in will be fit.
“You have to be patient to get the deal sometimes.
“We have 23 days to go and will build it up.
“We have a tough schedule but we are preparing well.”
