Head Coach Marinus Dijkhuizen reflected on his first three months in charge at Brentford, saying there was “almost never a dull moment” since he was appointed in June. He added: “[There has been] a lot going on with selling, buying, problems with the pitch, injuries. For me, it’s been a new experience with a lot of new staff members; I’ve enjoyed it.”
The 43-year-old revealed the first part of his tenure had been a steep learning curve.
“It’s been a big experience,” said Marinus. “I’ve learned more in a couple of months than in the three or four years before that as a trainer. This week I will sit down with my staff on a one-to-one [to get] a lot of feedback; it’s good to know each other better.”
He gave his thoughts on the latest arrivals, Sergi Canos and Ryan Woods from Liverpool and Shrewsbury Town respectively.
“Sergi gives us more options on the wing,” said Marinus. “We were a little bit short in options, especially from the bench the last two games so it’s important there are more options to fight for their place in the squad. Ryan Woods is always looking around before he gets the ball; I like that. He’s still young, 21, but we can improve him but I think he will be a good player for us in the future.”
The Dutchman spoke of his frustration on the inflated valuation of young English players in the current transfer market compared to Europe, and the ability to attract them to Griffin Park.
“It’s very difficult,” said Marinus. “Especially to get English players in; there’s so much money with other clubs. We can’t always afford the wages they pay. We’re a smaller club so that’s why we look at players from abroad because they are less expensive.”
