Marcello Trotta said Brentford’s players were “really happy” to win a “high quality” Sky Bet League One match against Swindon Town.
Promotion-chasing Brentford beat Play-Off hopefuls Swindon 3-2 yesterday with Marcello scoring the winner.
Swindon started well and went ahead early on but Sam Saunders curled in a free kick to level it up.
Brentford took control but Swindon scored early in the second half, against the run of play.
However, Clayton Donaldson headed an equaliser within minutes and Marcello scored the winner.
It was Brentford’s tenth in 11 League One games and took them to the top of the table, albeit only for a few hours as Leyton Orient and Wolverhampton Wanderers won later on to go above them.
“We are all really happy with the win,” said Marcello, speaking to Bees Player after the match.
“We knew we could go top of the league.
“It was a good reward and a good feeling.
“It was a high quality game.
“Technically and tactically it was good.
“Both teams showed high quality.
“We never gave up and we did what we had to do to win the game.
“They were really on it in the first 15 to 20 minutes.
“It took us a bit of time to get in to the game.
“When we did we got on top.”
Marcello started tucked in on the left side of a front three with Will Grigg and Clayton Donaldson.
He moved to be the central striker when Will Grigg went off injured and Stuart Dallas came on.
The striker, on loan from Fulham, came close a few times before he got his toe to a Jonathan Douglas ball and knocked it in.
The goal came with 19 minutes to go and proved to be the winner.
“We never give up,” said Marcello.
“When we went 2-1 down we scored very quickly.
“Then we kept going for the third to win the game and we did it.
“I had a few chances but as a striker, that’s positive.
“You always hope the next one will go in.
“That is what happened.
“It is good to score the winning goal.”
Marcello said although Brentford play 4-3-3 and try to pass the ball through the midfield, they mix it up.
He said he never felt isolated as the central striker and the system made life difficult for opposition defences.
“As the central striker you have to do things differently,” he explained.
“You have to run in behind and try to work both central defenders.
“Sometimes there will be space in front.
“In this team, you never feel alone up there.
“The midfield goes in behind sometimes and gives you an extra yard.
“We play 4-3-3 but we mix it up.
“That’s positive, defenders don’t know what to do.”
Marcello was named Man of the Match by the sponsors and received a standing ovation when he came off in stoppage time.
He described it as an amazing feeling and said he always felt Brentford’s fans were behind him.
The striker’s loan spell expires early next month and he said he wanted to stay for the rest of the season.
Brentford’s next game is against Milton Keynes Dons on Sunday and Marcello said the players were only focussed on winning that one.
“It was an amazing feeling to get that ovation,” said Marcello.
“The crowd have always been great here, they have been behind me.
“Today I showed everyone that I am here to do my best and we will go up.
“Hopefully I will stay, the clubs are discussing it.
“We know we are doing well.
“We have to try and win the next game.
“If we win games we will go up.
“We will just take one game at a time.”
