Marcello Trotta paid tribute to the Brentford supporters for their backing before his match-winning penalty against Gillingham.
The striker stroked home a spot kick with 20 minutes remaining against The Gills yesterday.
It gave Brentford a 2-0 lead, after Jonathan Douglas had scored in the first half, and proved to be the winner.
Gillingham scored soon after Marcello’s goal, and subsequent substitution, but Brentford did enough to win.
The penalty was Marcello’s first for Brentford since the last day of the 2012/13 season.
On that occasion, in the last seconds of the season, he hit the crossbar against Doncaster Rovers when a goal would have seen Brentford promoted.
This time, at the same end, he stroked it home.
“It was a nice feeling when the referee pointed to the spot,” said Marcello, speaking to Bees Player after the match.
“The crowd gave me a lift.
“They were brilliant, giving me support before I took it.
“It went in and I think it showed what it meant to me.
“I wanted to do it for the crowd and for everyone.
“It was more special that it was the winner.”
Marcello said it was a good game for Brentford to win.
The striker said he thought Brentford played well but had not produced a perfect performance.
The match was played in persistent rain.
The pitch started wet and got wetter, cutting up as the match wore on.
Marcello said Brentford coped with the conditions and created a lot of chances.
“We kept trying to play today, even though conditions were hard,” he said.
“I thought we would be comfortable at 2-0 but they came back well.
“It was good to get the win.
“I went off and they scored within two minutes.
“You want your team mates to keep them out.
“I think we played well.
“It wasn’t perfect but we tried to play as much as we could.
“It is another win for us.
“We coped with the conditions and tried to play when we could.
“It is positive that we created a lot of chances.
“The goals will come.”
Marcello said he relished the competition for his place from Will Grigg and Chuba Akpom, among others.
He said he felt he was playing well and praised his team mates for creating chances.
“I feel good but my performances are down to the team,” said the striker.
“They help us get up the pitch and get in positions to score goals.
“I feel good and I hope it will keep going.
“Competition for places is good.
“Two weeks ago Will came on and scored against Port Vale and that gives everyone a bit extra.
“You need to do more to play.
“It’s a nice pressure.”
Brentford moved back to the top of League one with the win.
Marcello said it was nice but the only thing on his mind was the next game, against Bristol City on Tuesday.
“It is nice to be up there.
“But we are only thinking about Tuesday and winning another game.
“You stay up there by winning games.”
