Brentford Assistant Manager David Weir said the sending off of Notts County defender Haydn Hollis gave The Bees room to exploit in their Sky Bet League One match.
The Bees beat County 3-1 at Griffin Park on Saturday.
When the County defender was dismissed for a foul on Clayton Donaldson, Adam Forshaw converted the resulting penalty.
Alan Judge then scored twice, either side of half time, to give The Bees the win.
County scored late on but Brentford always had the game won.
David, speaking to Bees Player: Match Day Live after the match, said there was no doubt about the decision.
He said the extra space that created gave The Bees the chance to score more goals.
“It was an obvious penalty and the red card changed the game a bit,” said David.
“We had more of the ball and more space.
“It was an opportunity for us to get a few goals.
“We were going side to side and trying to open them up.
“We have encountered that a lot, teams are sitting deep and making it difficult.
“We have to move them around and wait for the opportunity to strike.”
Brentford started the match with Stuart Dallas on the wing.
They also included Toumani Diagouraga in midfield, starting only his second match since December.
“Fresh legs and pace is important,” said David.
“When teams sit deep and behind the ball you have to have a spark to break them down.
“You need creativity and pace on the counter.
“It is always nice to freshen up the team, Stuart and Toumani have provided that.”
David explained that making changes to the team, using the squad, was something Brentford Manager Mark Warburton was keen to do.
He said everyone in the squad would make a contribution to the season.
“The manager has been clear that is a squad game and everyone will need to contribute,” said David.
“Stuart played today, Will Grigg has played, Toums has played, Jake Reeves has played.
“Players that have maybe not had as many minutes as they would have liked have been involved and started games.
“It is important they come in and contribute.
“We are clear we see it that way.
“It is great they can make an impact, when we say that to the players, we have to do it.
“Mark believes that.
“Toumani has gone out on loan, come back and fitted straight in.
“The proof is in the teams we pick.”
The win keeps Brentford second in Sky Bet League One.
They are six points ahead of Rotherham United, who are third, and both have six games remaining.
Brentford’s next match is against Crawley Town tomorrow, Tuesday April 8.
“We are counting down the games,” said David.
“The key thing for us is to do our job, keep our side of the bargain.
“We did that today, we played well.
“We were a bit disappointed with the way the game ended but there are so many positives today, the main one being the result.
“We just have to keep doing our job.
“Crawley will come and make it difficult.
“We will get ready to go again.”
