Brentford Youth Team Manager Louis Lancaster said his side played well in patches in their opening game of the season against Millwall.
The Bees drew 2-2 with the South London side last Saturday, the first game in the new Under-18 Professional Development League.
Louis said the decision making of his players, many of whom were from the Under-16 squad, let them down.
“The performance was a little bit disappointing,” he said.
“It was good in patches.
“We had a young side out, we have been working on being compact, it was good at time and at others it wasn’t.
“Our decision making let us down a bit.”
Brentford went 2-0 up on a hot afternoon thanks to a brace from Fabian Rowe but Millwall hit back.
They scored straight after The Bees went two up and then scored in stoppage time at the end of the game.
Louis said those goals came at crucial times but added the development of the players was his key aim.
“They were well taken goals from Fabian,” he said.
“We had opportunities; they came at the right time.
“We let them in at crucial times too.
“They scored just after we did and then with the last kick of the game.
“It’s all about performance, that’s crucial.
“I want to produce players for the Development Squad and they want to produce players for the First Team.
“That’s the aim.”
